The ‘Umbrella Academy’ Cast Picks Their Dream Fight Song

There’s a My Chemical Romance request in here. Naturally.

Trying to pick a favorite Umbrella Academy fight song is like trying to choose a favorite Hargreeves kid — an impossible task. From the series opener’s bank robbery flashback (set to Fitz and the Tantrums “The Walker”) to Five and Lila’s warehouse fight in Season 2 (with a ska cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” thumping in the background), the tracks are all just so banging. Luckily, the cast wasn’t forced to make such a difficult decision. Instead, the Umbrella Academy members were asked to each pick a song they would want featured in their own fight scenes as part of their series’ Netflix Geeked Week panel ahead of Season 3’s June 22 premiere. The ensuing conversation still went as smoothly as any Hargreeves reunion (chaotically, of course).

“I think [I would pick] ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ by The Black Keys, because I really like upbeat, good songs to ultraviolence. It goes really well,” Tom Hopper, who plays super-strong sorta-simian Luther, tells moderator Felicia Day. Someone fits right in on their own show.

After giving it some thought, Genesis Rodriguez replies, “The song is The Hollies ‘Long Cool Woman’ … er, the coat song!’ After some debate, Emmy Raver-Lampman, who portrays rumor-hearing Allison Hargreeves, offers up “Long Cool Woman in a Black Coat” as the correct title. Everyone nods in agreement, until someone off-screen shouts the right answer: “[Long Cool Woman in a] Black Dress.”

Watch the video below to learn which cast member is ready for the Purple Rain soundtrack to flood their next fight, and which one wants a My Chemical Romance deep cut — a nod to MCR front person Gerard Way, whose comic book series of the same name inspired Umbrella Academy.
