Vaughn made an appearance at Essence Festival in July where the Miss Governor Part 2 trailer debuted with a new name! Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Dunkerson (Vaughn) was finding her way in Part 1, but she’s ready to turn up the political halls of Mississippi as Miss Governor in Part 2 — which is now streaming.

In Perry’s first comedy series for Netflix, Antoinette is a politician who wins an election — and then realizes her new job will involve a lot more than what she originally signed up for.

Miss Governor is the second series under Perry’s multi-year first-look creative partnership with Netflix, which sees him write, produce, and direct films, series, and faith-based features. Perry’s latest film, The Six Triple Eight, became his most viewed film on Netflix in its first four weeks of streaming, and the release boosted viewing for his other films by 45%.

Miss Governor Part 1 premiered on the heels of the hit drama Beauty in Black Part 1, reaching No. 1 on the Global Top 10 TV List (English) after its debut in October 2024.

What is Miss Governor about?

The series follows politician Antoinette Dunkerson (Vaughn), whom we first meet during her campaign for Lieutenant Governor. After she wins her election, she must figure out how to thrive under a sexist and condescending governor, while attempting to keep her family in line now that they’re all in the public eye.

Who is in the Miss Governor cast?

The Miss Governor cast features some familiar faces from the Tyler Perry universe, including Vaughn, Jo Marie Payton, Karon Riley, and Robert Craighead, along with newcomers like Jade Novah, Drew Olivia Tillman, Tré Boyd, and Dyon Brooks.

What happens in Miss Governor Season 1?

Miss Governor Part 1 ends with Antoinette finally standing up to Governor Harper (Craighead), publicly opposing a state pipeline initiative at a press conference and even looking into hiring her own staff. In other words, Lieutenant Governor Dunkerson is here representing herself and the people of Mississippi, like she’d always intended to do when she took office. 

“Sometimes you just have to get to a point where you just stand up and do it,” Perry says of Antoinette’s “enough is enough” moment. “To see her find her voice after the relentless taunting of her mother and her children and her friends in that moment [feels] really good. It was good for me to see.”

Unfortunately, after giving the governor a piece of her mind, a horde of government clerks rush into his office calling for an ambulance. It turns out he’s had a heart attack, but his employees don’t exactly want to relinquish their control in his absence … 

How does Miss Governor Part 2 end?

While Governor Harper is recovering, his allies try everything they can to prevent Antoinette from ascending to the governorship, from launching a smear campaign to initiating a hearing regarding her improper relationship with her bodyguard. But Antoinette endures and stays resilient. “Anytime anybody walks into their own power, there's a major shift in everything around them,” says Perry. And in the finale, she is ready to take her place in the position she’s earned — governor of the state of Mississippi.

That is, until news breaks that Governor Harper has been discharged from the hospital and is ready to come back to work. He isn’t necessarily well, but his allies couldn’t care less. They just want to stay in power. Now, you might be wondering if Antoinette is going to fight to stay governor… Perry says she won’t go down that easy. “All I can tell you is that she's going to do what she thinks is best to make sure that she is in the best place,” he says. 

Who is the creative team behind Miss Governor?

Perry is the writer, director, and producer of Miss Governor. Niya Palmer is co-creator of the series with Perry. Palmer, Keisha Lance Bottoms, and star Vaughn executive produce. Bottoms, formerly the mayor of Atlanta and an adviser to President Biden, brings her political experience to the project. Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland will also produce for Tyler Perry Studios.
