We get it. After that jaw-dropping Season 4 finale of The Diplomat, we, too, are desperate to know what happens next in creator Debora Cahn’s gripping political drama.

Well, no need to make any Grace Penn–level threats, because The Diplomat has been renewed for Season 5.

Season 4 ended with Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) taking a huge stand after President Penn (Allison Janney) makes a shocking declaration at the G7 summit. In a surprising and goosebump-inducing last-minute move, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) follows his wife’s lead. You can read more about that finale here.

“It is very important in terms of what we’re looking at, [to consider] what you can do as a group that you can’t do as an individual, or what will make a difference as a group that won’t make a difference as an individual,” says Cahn of the shocking decisions the characters make in the Season 4 finale. “Moral contagion works in both directions.”

Before that big final scene, Season 4 sees two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate has brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Penn and Vice President Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon could hurtle the United States toward war. Kate and Todd (Bradley Whitford), at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

Created by Cahn, who serves as executive producer for Season 4 alongside Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie, The Diplomat also stars Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah.

The Diplomat is a Golden Globe–, Emmy-, Actor-, PGA-, WGA-, and Critics Choice–nominated series and has received numerous additional accolades since it premiered in 2023, including an AFI Honor. For Season 3, Russell won the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and Janney won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
