Always calm under pressure, Nefertari Vivi, Princess of Alabasta, is a gifted problem solver in ONE PIECE. When things don’t work out, she doesn’t give up. She simply tries to find another way forward and continues the fight, which Luffy, captain of the Straw Hats, greatly admires. Following her father’s example as a humble and gracious ruler, Vivi takes her leadership role very seriously and is willing to do anything, including going undercover as a Baroque Works agent known as Miss Wednesday, for the good of her kingdom.

“I think Vivi, she does bring something new, which is the skill of diplomacy,” says Charithra Chandran, who plays Vivi, in the sixth episode of ONE PIECE: Into the Grand Line: Official Podcast. “She knows how to negotiate. She knows how to keep her cool in stressful situations. And I think she has a lot of foresight about how best to achieve the goal at hand, even if in the short term it requires sacrifice.”

Special abilities

While undercover as Miss Wednesday, Vivi favors peacock slashers as her weapon of choice, wielding them with skill and precision. She also sometimes employs the enchanting vertigo dance, which makes her opponents dizzy. In addition to the fighting prowess she honed as a Baroque Works agent, the princess is known for her strategic mind and her diplomacy.

Motivation

As a child, Vivi was fascinated by her father’s work as a leader of the world’s government. While eavesdropping on a council meeting, she once watched him stand up to the tyrant King Wapol, expressing that a royal’s job is not about power but about listening to the voices of the people, which Vivi took to heart. After the confrontation, Wapol stormed out and slapped the young princess across the face, but she bravely de-escalated the conflict, showcasing her promise as a natural leader.

A decade later, Baroque Works starts sowing dissent between King Cobra and the citizens of Alabasta, pushing the country to the brink of civil war. So Vivi and Igaram, the Captain of the Royal Guard, go undercover within the criminal organization to bring them down. When their true identities are discovered, Igaram is killed, leaving Vivi to escape with the Straw Hats. Now, to save her kingdom, Vivi must return home and deliver intelligence to her father about the leader of Baroque Works.

Season 2

  • While stuck inside a whale with her partner, Mr. 9, Miss Wednesday ambushes Nami and tries to commandeer the Going Merry. After Usopp and Sanji intervene, Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9 are taken captive by the Straw Hats.
  • Because Luffy doesn’t believe Miss Wednesday is a threat, she is allowed to escape as they approach Whisky Peak. While the Straw Hats take on Baroque Works, who control the island, Miss Wednesday and her ally, Igaram, try to once again seize the Going Merry for their own use.
  • In a confrontation with Miss Valentine and Mr. 5, it’s revealed that Miss Wednesday and Igaram are working undercover against Baroque Works. While under attack, Igaram asks the Straw Hats to deliver Miss Wednesday, who is actually a princess, safely to her home of Alabasta Kingdom, and Luffy agrees. As an injured Igaram creates a diversion, Miss Wednesday and the Straw Hats escape Whisky Peak. Back on the boat, Miss Wednesday watches an explosion on the island that kills Igaram and then reveals her true identity: Nefertari Vivi, princess of Alabasta.
  • While exploring Little Garden, Vivi and Luffy ride dinosaurs and, with help from a giant named Dorry, have a memorial to honor Igaram. But members of Baroque Works, including Miss Valentine, Mr. 5, Mr. 3, and Miss Goldenweek, track down the Straw Hats, and Mr. 3 holds Vivi, Nami, and Zoro captive by encasing them in wax. After Usopp rescues them, Vivi and the others fight off Miss Valentine and Mr. 5. Back on the Going Merry, they set course to Alabasta.
  • When Nami unexpectedly falls ill, Vivi insists they stop at the nearby Drum Island for medical attention, and she uses her diplomatic skills to gain entrance.
  • As the tyrant King Wapol returns to Drum Island to reclaim his throne, Vivi joins Luffy in Drum Castle, and together with Sanji and Tony Tony Chopper, they take him down. With Drum Island saved and Nami healed, the crew sets sail for Alabasta with a plan to help Vivi take down Baroque Works and save her kingdom. Finally, the Princess shares that she has discovered the criminal organization’s most guarded secret, the true identity of their leader, Mr. Zero.
