Happy Gilmore 2 Is Full of Easter Eggs from the Original Movie

    Tap, tap, tap on in.

    July 28, 2025

Lace up your Timberland boots, throw on your cleanest Bruins jersey, and fire up the Plymouth Duster (if it starts): Happy Gilmore 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

It’s been nearly 30 years since we’ve seen Happy (Adam Sandler), but your favorite menace on the green has returned, ready to show off his special swing for a new generation.

Sandler isn’t the only original alum from the first movie to play another 18 holes. Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald both return as Virginia Venit and Shooter McGavin. There’s some new blood on the course with newcomers Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, Travis Kelce, and plenty more fresh faces.

Some professional golfers also round out the party, including John Daly, Paige Spiranac, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Will Zalatoris.

In addition to Sandler, the entire creative team from the first movie returns for the sequel. Original Happy Gilmore co-writer Tim Herlihy is the co-screenwriter for Happy Gilmore 2 with Sandler, Happy Gilmore director Dennis Dugan is an executive producer, and Happy Gilmore producers Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds also produce. Sandler’s Murder Mystery director Kyle Newacheck serves as Happy Gilmore 2’s director.

But for the eagle-eyed Happy Gilmore fan, the real stars of the show are all the Easter eggs that pop up throughout the sequel. From the beer hat Happy’s first caddy wore to the original Subway golf bag, Happy Gilmore 2 is chockful of references to the original.

Were you able to spot them all? Take a look at the list below and see if you caught anything we didn’t:

(1:06:06)

We see a fan doing Happy’s celebratory bull dance from the first movie.

(2:00:00)

The in-world Happy Gilmore video game re-creates scenes from the first movie, including when Happy strangles his caddie and The Price Is Right Host Bob Barker punches Happy.

(3:59:01)

Happy loses his Grandma’s (Frances Bay) house, which he spent the whole first movie trying so hard to keep.

(9:51:00)

PGA Tour golf champion John Daly is living in Happy’s garage. His real-life golf persona is similar to Happy Gilmore’s.

(11:02)

We see the return of Happy’s Happy Place from the first film, but now with a new look.

(12:19)

In the first Happy Gilmore, Happy received a number of giant checks after placing in various golf tournaments. Here you can see a handful of those big checks stored next to some of his golf trophies in the basement.

(16:46:04)

Happy saying, “Eat a bag of d—ks!” is a nod to the amount of times Happy was bleeped on his first pro tour match (not the Waterbury open). As you might recall, this is when Virginia sees the potential for Happy to be the next big thing on the tour.

(19:41)

Happy looks up to the heavens and asks his old mentor Chubbs (Carl Weathers) for golfing tips. We see a clip from the first movie of Chubbs teaching Happy that “It’s all in the hips!” Once Happy remembers that piece of advice, he gets his swing back. Then he does his bull riding dance.

(20:40:10)

Sports commentator Dan Patrick appears as Pat Daniels on his own namesake show, Sports Hole with Pat Daniels. (Fun fact: Pat Daniels is also Dan Patrick’s name, just flipped!).

Ben Stiller as Hal L. in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Ben Stiller reprises his role as Hal L. from the first film, where he played an orderly at Happy’s grandma’s nursing home. He’s the therapist that runs the AA meetings that Happy is mandated to attend. His program is called “H.A.L. Healing Alkies for Life.” We see a clip of Hal L. from first movie where he tells Happy’s grandma, “You’re in my world now,” which is one of his most memorable lines from Happy Gilmore. Now he says the same thing to Happy in the present day.

(32:39)

Happy’s car is the same one he drove in the first movie. It’s not the same car, confirms director Newacheck. “We had to beat up a new one. I wanted the original Duster so bad. But they did a good job. They found another one, and they made it look beautiful, and it was still an absolute pile of shit. It was a piece-of-shit car, 100%. I entertained the idea of trying to keep the Duster at my house until on set, I noticed that it was rusting out, and I was like, “That's not going to work for me.”

Happy wears his gold tour championship winners jacket.

(33:42)

Happy reunites with Doug Thompson (Dennis Dugan), the tour championship commissioner in the first movie who was a bit of an antagonist to Happy.

Verne Lundquist as himself and Jack Giarraputo as Jack Beard in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
(39:40)

Sports news announcers Jack Beard and Verne Lundquist are back. Jack Beard is a fictional character played by Jack Giarraputo, who is one of the producers on Happy Gilmore 2. Lundquist is a professional sportscaster.

(40:10)

Happy beholds his famous Boston Bruins hockey jersey.

(40:37:19)

Pro golfer Will Zalatoris appears. We learn he’s supposed to be the older version of the caddie Happy choked in the first movie. In Happy Gilmore 2, Happy asks him to be his caddie. But now he’s a pro golfer — with his own caddie.

Kevin Nealon as Gary Potter in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
(41:44)

Kevin Nealon reprises his role from the first film as professional golfer Gary Potter, interviewing golfers before the tournament. He speaks to pro golfer Scottie Scheffler in a cameo. Scheffler is currently ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

(43:26)

Happy updates his Happy Place to something more age-appropriate, including a cameo appearance by frequent collaborator Rob Schneider in a cowboy costume riding a tricycle.

(47:13:20)

Now Zalatoris is strangling his own caddie, as Happy looks on fondly in the background. Zalatoris’ caddie is played by Ben Stiller’s son, Quinn.

Boban Marjanović as Drago Larson in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
(53:47)

Sandler’s Hustle co-star and professional basketball player Boban Marjanović appears. In the first movie, Mr. Larson (Richard Kiel) is Happy’s boss in a construction job who famously had a nail stuck in his head after Happy shot him with a nail gun by accident. Marjanović plays his son, Drago Larson.

(56:03:07)

Happy’s phone/flask background is a photo of Happy and Virginia kissing from the first movie.

(59:22)

When Billy Jenkins (Haley Joel Osment) goes up to swing, he says, “It’s all in the hips,” just like Chubbs taught Happy.

Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
(1:02:13:19)

Happy and Shooter McGavin meet again at Virginia’s grave. This scene, explains Newacheck, is “paying homage to everybody who helped the legacy of Happy Gilmore while at the same time using that as a backdrop for a pivotal scene in the second movie — it's a certain sense of awareness that comedy has got to have, and it feels like we knew that. It feels good to honor those that were in the first one and could not be here to help with the second one.”

(1:02:40:00)

Shooter tells Happy he stole his life from him — only for Happy to reference one of the most quoted lines from the first movie: “Why would I want to steal the life of somebody who eats pieces of s—t for breakfast?”

(1:02:54:16)

During Happy and Shooter’s fight, we see a few tombstones from beloved characters, including Happy’s grandma, the “mister!” lady from his grandma’s nursing home, and Bob Barker (as a nod to his cameo in the first movie).

(1:05:21:12)

Comedian Robert Smigel reprises his character as the IRS guy from the first movie. But now he’s a lawyer because he got tired of everybody hating him. Happy hires him.

Lavell Crawford as Slim Peterson in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
(1:07:51)

Lavell Crawford plays Chubbs’ son Slim Peterson in the sequel, down to the wooden hand.

(1:12:12)

Shooter does his famous “Shooter hands” gesture from the first film.

(1:17:22:18)

Happy is still a Subway-sponsored golfer, like in the first movie. You can see the logo for the sandwich brand on his golf bag holding his clubs, as well as a yellow “Happy Gilmore” sock covering his hockey stick. Fun fact:  “We got the original clubs,” says Newacheck. “We found the Subway bag out of the Universal prop room.”

(1:17:22:18)

You can see the same photo of Happy’s grandma from the first movie dangling from his car’s rearview mirror.

(1:24:52:16)

Eminem calls Happy a jackass while he’s swinging. Does that very specific name-calling ring any bells? You guessed it, he’s the son of the “Jackass” guy from the first movie (the late Joe Flaherty), who kept heckling Happy during his Happy Gilmore tournaments. Eminem’s simply maintaining tradition.

(1:28:09:18)

Shooter pays homage to one of his most famous lines from the first movie, at the encouragement of Happy. As they’re competing against Maxi Golf, Happy
gets him to say the Maxi golfers should go back. And go back where? “To their shanties! Because this is Shooter’s tour!” Shooter proceeds to do a very big “Shooter hands” gesture, as the occasion requires.

(1:33:41:00)

While Verne Lundquist is commentating, he says, “I’m not even playing and my palms are sweaty, mom’s spaghetti.” This is a reference to Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself.”

(1:38:00)

As Happy is up to swing, Chubbs’ son Slim tells him, “Do it like my daddy taught you — tap it, tap it in.”

(1:43:40:16)

A direct reference to the ending of the first Happy Gilmore, Chubbs appears up in heaven with the alligator that took his hand — and Abe Lincoln — to say hi to Happy. The Jackass guy and his son are there too, along with Bob Barker, Happy’s grandma, and Mr. Larson. Virginia emerges alone at the end and tells Happy, “You’re OK.”
