Anatomy of a Scandal is pretty dark: It follows a prominent British politician whose marriage and career is threatened by a credible accusation of sexual assault. The show covers trauma, sexual harassment in the workplace and gendered double standards. But amid the scenes of a man on trial, we can’t help but notice the, well, pretty glorious interiors of the main characters’ apartment. Was it purchased with the blood money James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) earned as a corrupt member of Parliament? Probably. But would we love to live there? Definitely.
If it’s difficult to watch Whitehouse and his wife, Sophie (Sienna Miller), argue over his affair and strategize his legal defense, you can always zone out and keep an eye on the loveseat they’re sitting on instead, or their comically massive array of flowered-up vases.

As the show proceeds, we learn the sordid details of James’ past, and these revelations warp his relationship with his wife considerably. We’re also treated to the fine appointments of their apartment, like its impressive assortment of wallpaper designs. Look at all this wallpaper!

In many apartments, you’re forced to open cabinets repeatedly to try to remember where you left the oregano. But not here: With her chic green spice rack, Sophie has no issue tracking down ingredients. Who’s going to get the spice rack in the divorce? Not James, we hope.

A brief glimpse at James’ parents’ country home also gives us some insight into his apartment’s vase fixation. Decorative plates are one thing, but does James’ mother really need that many gravy boats?

We also noticed that even the headboard of the couple’s bed is ornately crafted: Forget counting sheep and just try counting all these... enormous snakes? Hmm. Maybe James picked out the headboard.

The apartment’s quaint (yet also lavish) study is an example of the tricky balance the production designers have struck, between crafting a believable, comfortable home for a wealthy couple and still nodding at the coldness lying under the surface. It feels like a model home for a model family, until the secrets start to come out.

Now, all that being said: These stairs do seem unsafe. Maybe this place is a bit of a fixer-upper after all.
