When Aline Brosh McKenna, the writer and director of Your Place or Mine, was filling out the cast of her latest rom-com, she called on some Exes for help.
In fact, the film, which stars Reese Witherspoon (Debbie) and Ashton Kutcher (Peter) as FaceTime-crossed lovers, is a veritable Easter egg hunt for fans of Brosh McKenna’s musical dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. “When you’re making a movie, you need people who can stick the landing in those smaller parts,” says the rom-com maestro. “And I knew these folks would.”
Casting the Crazy crew also came with the added benefit of being a reunion of sorts for this tight-knit group who worked together for four seasons. “We all miss each other, so it’s a fun opportunity to spend time together,” she says. “There are so many close relationships that came from that show.”
Below, we offer a breakdown of how your favorite residents of West Covina pop up in Your Place or Mine.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Rebecca, a flighty, selfish lawyer who dreams of being a musical theater star. She abruptly moves to California to chase a doomed romance… and is strangled (figuratively) by anxiety.
Your Place or Mine: Scarlett, a flighty, selfish babysitter, who dreams of being a TV star. She abruptly moves to Vancouver to chase the role of a doomed maid… who’s strangled (literally) by the lead of the show.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Heather, Rebecca’s take-no-BS, vocal-fried millennial neighbor who slacks her way through most of the series.
Your Place or Mine: Becca, Peter’s take-no-BS girlfriend who’d eat vocal-fried millennials for breakfast and then floss her teeth with their bones.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Father Brah, a laid-back, empathic priest who helps people find what they’re looking for.
Your Place or Mine: Sidney, an uptight empathic executive who hopes Peter finds what he’s looking for.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Bert, a wine aficionado who stretches the word “rioja” into a zillion syllables.
Your Place or Mine: Alex, a whine aficionado who stretches an awkward conversation with Peter into a zillion minutes.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Nicky, Rebecca’s sadistic cellmate who has no patience for Rebecca’s soliloquies about Harvard.
Your Place or Mine: Marisa, Debbie’s statistics classmate who has no patience for Debbie’s soliloquies about pencils.
