Emmy Raver-Lampman thinks for a moment. Then it comes to her.
“Bacon,” she sighs. The Umbrella Academy star, who plays the rumor-hearing superhero Allison, has confused her co-stars who’ve assembled for a video panel celebrating Geeked Week, Netflix’s annual extravaganza of upcoming shows. “Bacon?” her fellow members of the dysfunctional Hargeeves family amusedly ask. “Bacon,” she asserts again, serving up a cryptic reply to host Felicia Day’s request for a “spoiler without context” before the series’ June 27 Season 3 premiere.

After hearing Lampman’s “bacon” comment, Justin H. Min (Ben) becomes “inspired by food” and teases, “Shrimp cocktail and lamb chops.” Yum.
The cast members clearly have some fancy function on the brain, despite the impending apocalypse. (There’s always an impending apocalypse for the Umbrella Academy crew.)
“I’m going to need my bow tie,” Tom Hopper (Luther) says confidently.

Yet, not everything is luxurious for the Umbrella Academy, as Aidan Gallagher (Five) drops this mysterious tidbit: “Breaks. Look at the past stuff that’s already come out. And if you look for the word breaks, you’ll find a mind spoiler that won’t make sense yet.” Leave it to Five to drop the biggest head-scratcher of his siblings.
Of course, the cast couldn’t spend all 30 minutes of the panel doling out tiny, probably nonsensical spoilers. But they did preview some very exciting, very real surprises for Season 3, everything from a Sparrows sneak peek to a warm welcome to the Hotel Obsidian. Discover the conversation’s biggest highlights, and watch the video below for the complete Hargreeves family reunion — including a very special aftershow announcement.
Hotel Obsidian is a fan-favorite Umbrella Academy location for readers of the comic books that inspired the series. Those fans will not be disappointed once they see the phantasmagorical hotel come alive on their screens. “The production of it is just insane. When we got to walk in [it] the first time, it was like you were transported into a different world,” David Castañeda (Diego) says of the “beautiful” set. “We shot throughout that whole thing. So it pretty much became the backbone to the whole story.”
Even the Sparrows will apparently get to visit the Obsidian. Genesis Rodriguez (Sloane) adds, “Yes. There’s quite a bit [for the Sparrows] in that new space. Really what they were able to do setwise was actually incredible.”
The biggest twist of the Umbrella Academy Season 2 finale is the reveal that sweet Ben is alive and well in a new timeline — and now he’s not so sweet. Instead, he’s a proud member of the Sparrows, with no memory (or fondness) for the Umbrellas.
“A lot of what [creator] Steve Blackman and I talked about was playing around with this idea of nature versus nurture and how much of the essence of Ben we wanted to keep. And how much you would change because of this different environment that he grew up in,” Min says. Apparently, Ben’s “essence” is quite “impressionable,” according to the actor, so the change is quite apparent. Someone give Klaus (Robert Sheehan) a hug over the loss of his best ghost bud.
Speaking of Ben’s new family, the panel video reveals a sneak peek into The Umbrella Academy Season 3, showing just how in sync the Sparrow Academy really is. They work out — together! — while plotting, including the “opinionated” Christopher the floating cube. Rodriguez, who plays the Number Five of her team, sheds some more light on what viewers can expect from the Sparrows.
“The Sparrow Academy is a completely different family. Equally as dysfunctional. But they really are crime fighters. They’re organized,” Rodriguez — whose character can apparently control gravity, according to the panel — says, using a word that has never been deployed by the Umbrellas. “They’ve trained their entire lives... They’re kind of a big deal. They’re very popular. Lots of billboards. They’re a brand.”
The Umbrella Academy travels to Season 3’s alternate dimension with a Commission briefcase — which should mean they could break it out at any time. Gallagher, whose character is a Commission veteran, isn’t so sure. “[Five] keeps an eye on the briefcase, but it’s in the back of his mind to use that. Because who knows, this might be fine,” he says. Something ending up fine? For the Umbrella Academy? Never.
