London Bridge: iconic British landmark with multiple songs written about it. Tower Bridge: beautiful, picturesque landmark. No songs. Can you really blame a girl for using the prettier bridge in a music video?
Fergie famously shot the visuals for her 2006 classic “London Bridge” in front of … Tower Bridge. She hasn’t heard the end of it for nearly two decades. Luckily, in honor of Lena Dunham’s Too Much, which comes to Netflix on July 10, Ms. Fergalicious has recruited the series’ star Megan Stalter to help right her wrong in a new music video for “London Bridge.” Just check out the video below to see what we mean. Oh, s**t!
This time, Fergie pays tribute to the titular bridge in a music video she filmed alongside Stalter, at the correct location. Besides, it’s easy to understand why she took such creative liberties the first time around. “It’s obvious — because of the look of Tower Bridge and the look of London Bridge,” she tells Tudum. “We were doing it for the video, obviously.”
Too Much stars Stalter as Jessica, a New York workaholic who takes a new job in London after a bad breakup, and unexpectedly meets musician Felix (Will Sharpe). So begins a love story for the ages, just like what Jess refers to as the British Jones’s Diaries — as in Bridget Jones’s Diary — and the other classic rom-coms set across the pond that inspired her move.
Fergie’s track opens the series, which she watched twice all the way through before arriving on set with Stalter. The music video reimagining is a collaboration between director Mia Barnes, Dunham, and Fergie herself, paying homage to the power of reinvention and the spirit of Too Much. Read on to find out more about the project and how it came together — 20 years after the song first came out.
Why make a new video for such an iconic song?
Fergie: I’ve been on a hiatus, and I’ve been able to do these fun little projects where I get to make things and tickle that creative bone inside of me. I loved this idea, and I loved — especially at this time in my life — just being a little bit messier, a little bit goofier, and just having fun with life. Let’s take the piss out of it, as Brits would say.
[Making a music video for a song for which you already have a music video] was this farfetched idea that I’d really never heard of being done before. It was so ridiculous that, of course, I was attracted to it. And Meg being involved — that was a no-brainer for me because she’s just so talented, and it just felt like this creative kismet moment.
What was it like working with Meg?
Fergie: She’s a superstar, first of all. Before I shot the video, I watched the entire Netflix series twice all the way through. So I felt like I was already Jess’s friend. I got the vibe of Jess, and I felt like I could jump right in. We had a blast. I could be my goofball self around Meg, and it was just fun. So much fun banter going back and forth, and just so real and so easy, effortless, fun, funny. We laughed, we cried. It was awesome. Being with her is just so natural. I could just be myself 100%.
The scenes of Meg mimicking the original video and dancing in front of the guards …
Fergie: That’s my favorite part, because I couldn’t wait to see what she was going to do. She nailed it and took it to the next level. I love that I’m at the point in my life where I’m sipping tea, and it’s now her turn to go dance on the guards.
What was your favorite scene to film?
Fergie: You don’t see that much of it, but when we had a moment on the stairs when Meg was hyperventilating and I had to calm her down. We had this whole moment where I had her put her hand on her heart and her hand on her stomach and breathe. And then I’m like, “She’s okay. It’s okay. You’re my baby. Let’s look up at the clouds.” It was a very fun moment to calm her down and be in that situation with her. It was intimate — she and I were just sitting there just having fun, just being ridiculous.

What’s your favorite scene from the show?
Fergie: There are so many. I love the scenes with Meg, Lena, Rhea Perlman, and Rita Wilson — them as a family. I love the banter between women, it was so real and incredible. Lena’s special sauce is all over this show with the writing. It’s like Girls meets Bridget Jones’s Diary. It’s heartwarming. It’s funny. It’s got a point of view. It creates conversation. There’s a love story that’s beautiful. I love the love story between Jess and Felix. It was so intimate and layered.
What’s it like to look back at the legacy of your song after 20 years?
Fergie: It’s beautifully having its own resurgence. I feel like these are just all blessings that are just coming to me. It’s like a 50th birthday present. All of this has been a gift to me from the universe. I’m just so happy that I’m open to receiving it, and it’s coming at such a beautiful time. When these things happen, I have to lean into them — lean into the tears, lean into the fear, and push through it, and know that beauty is in the creative. It reminds me of who I am, and has me reflect on everything that I’ve gotten to do in my life. It’s been quite a ride, and it’s still going. That’s what’s incredible.
