“Nothing in life worth having comes without a little danger.” That’s basically the family motto of The Gentlemen’s Eddie Horniman (Theo James), the British soldier who unexpectedly inherits his family’s estate — and the marijuana empire underneath it. He initially butts heads with the steely and sophisticated Susie (Kaya Scodelario), who runs the cannabis operation. But the two unite to take out their enemies, and in Season 2, they expand their thriving business from Halstead Manor to the lakeside villas of Italy — for better or worse.
Created by Guy Ritchie, the series introduces an aristocratic criminal underworld full of witty dialogue, thrilling action, unexpected twists, dry humor and, of course, sharp tailoring. If you’ve already finished watching Season 2 and need a similarly irreverent crime title to bide your time until Season 3, watch these movies and shows that share some of its storytelling elements. Black Doves
Channel The Gentlemen’s tangled web of secrets in this London-set thriller. Keira Knightley plays a spy whose organization sells sought-after secrets to the highest bidder, and for the past 10 years, she has been quietly collecting intel on her husband, a high-level politician. When her secret lover is assassinated, she teams with an old friend (Ben Whishaw) to investigate the mysterious death, only to uncover a massive conspiracy that’s linked to a looming geopolitical crisis. Season 2 lands in November.
Big Mistakes
Lawbreaking seems to fit The Gentlemen’s Eddie like a custom-made suit. In this comedy, the chaotic world of organized crime is indeed a laughing matter. Series showrunner Dan Levy plays a gay pastor juggling a secret romance and his high-maintenance family. When his mother (Laurie Metcalf) insists he bring a gift to his dying grandmother, his sister (Taylor Ortega) steals an inexpensive necklace from a shop that claims it’s only for display. The siblings soon learn they stole from the wrong people. Season 2 is on the way.
Bloodhounds
For more crime syndicates and a lot of action, step into the ring with this Korean crime drama, based on Jeong Chan’s webtoon of the same name. The first season centers on Gun-woo (Woo Do-hwan) and Woo-jin (Lee Sang-yi), two former Marines turned boxers who join forces to take down a ruthless loan shark operation. The second season picks up three years later and sees the prizefighters entering the brutal world of an underground international boxing league.
The Brothers Sun
Here’s an action-packed series with its own complex family dynamics and plenty of dark comedy. It begins with the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad being shot by a mysterious assassin. As Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, the surviving family (Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, and Sam Song Li) must heal the wounds caused by their separation — and figure out what brotherhood and family truly mean before one of their countless enemies kills them all.
Dept. Q
Another British crime drama with snappy dialogue, but everything is just a bit grittier. Matthew Goode plays Carl Morck, a crabby English detective chief inspector who works in Edinburgh, Scotland. He’s a curmudgeon for a reason: After an on-duty shooting leaves his partner paralyzed and another police officer dead, he’s reassigned to Dept. Q, where he investigates cold cases alongside a motley crew of misfits. An adaptation of the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, the already renewed series hails from Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit, Godless).
The Diplomat
The Gentlemen shares its high stakes, thrilling pace, and witty dialogue with this political drama. Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler, the titular diplomat who built a career working behind the scenes in war-torn regions. She’s now navigating a new, more high-profile role as an American ambassador to the United Kingdom. Plus, she’s also figuring out what to do about her strained marriage to a political star (Rufus Sewell). Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford are also in the show, which debuts Season 4 in October.
Dogs of Berlin
Eddie and Susie did not get along at the onset of The Gentlemen. Likewise, this German series stars Felix Kramer and Fahri Yardim as cops who reluctantly team up to investigate the death of a Turkish-German soccer superstar murdered the night before a major international match. They’re soon forced into a territorial battle with the Berlin underworld that forces them to face their own weaknesses and criminal activities — and make a final decision on which side of the law they’re actually on.
The Gray Man
Get ready for a slick action thriller with a sprinkle of Gentlemen-like humor. Ryan Gosling plays a CIA operative who accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, and Chris Evans plays the assassin tracking him down as part of a global manhunt. Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton are among the cast of the movie, based on the first book of Mark Greaney’s hit series. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo (The Electric State) say both a sequel and a spin-off are in the works.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
For more of The Gentlemen’s class satire and spectacular costumes, watch this whodunit movie, in which Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) travels to a remote island after receiving a mysterious invitation from a tech billionaire (Edward Norton). When a wealthy guest winds up dead, the detective must sniff out the murderer among the ensemble (Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jessica Henwick). Plus, the backdrop to this darkly funny murder mystery is crystal-clear waters, blue skies, and a view that’s literally to die for.
Lupin
Fans of The Gentlemen seem to like their crime dramas with a ton of style, a bit of socioeconomic commentary, and a satisfying twist or two. This acclaimed French series stars Omar Sy as Assane Diop, the suave son of Senegalese immigrants who uses the ruses of French fictional master of disguise Arsène Lupin to trick, evade, and conceal. He sets out to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family more than two decades earlier. The clever thief returns soon — Part 4 arrives in October.
Peaky Blinders
Ready to meet another family of criminals? Cillian Murphy plays Tommy Shelby, an ambitious crime boss working in 19th-century Birmingham’s criminal underworld. The six-season series traces Tommy’s rise, even as new foes threaten to disrupt the family’s ascension from street gangsters to legitimate political players. With an anachronistic rock ’n’ roll soundtrack, glamorous costumes, and layered performances from Murphy and the ever-expanding supporting cast, this slick period piece is worthy of its passionate fan base. Make it a marathon with the follow-up movie Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
