Dan Levy is back with more family drama (and crime) in the new comedy series Big Mistakes, now streaming on Netflix. The series takes viewers on a wildly dysfunctional, hilariously chaotic ride, following two incapable siblings who are blackmailed into the world of organized crime.

So grab your stolen necklace and your best excuse — here’s everything you need to know about this family’s descent into mayhem and the stars who brought every bad decision to life.

Who’s in the cast of Big Mistakes?

The cast of Big Mistakes is:

  • Levy (Schitt’s Creek, Good Grief) as Nicky Dardano
  • Taylor Ortega (Welcome to Flatch, The Four Seasons) as Morgan Dardano
  • Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird, Scream 2, Roseanne, Hacks) as Linda Dardano
  • Jack Innanen (Adults, The Office Movers) as Max
  • Boran Kuzum (Thank You, Next, Bihter: A Forbidden Passion) as Yusuf
  • Abby Quinn (Hell of a Summer, Knock at the Cabin) as Natalie
  • Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds, Sharp Objects) as Annette
  • Jacob Gutierrez (Dear Edward, Bull) as Tareq
  • Joe Barbara (Just in Time, FBI) as Mike
  • Mark Ivanir (Emilia Pérez, Zero Day) as Ivan

“A lot of playing Nicky is in response to playing David [in Schitt’s Creek],” Levy tells Tudum. “Nicky is so concerned about what people think and how he shows up in a room. He’s making some really bad decisions, but they’re all rooted in well-intentioned action. He’s just trying his best. It was really fun to play a character that was very antithetical to a character I had played before, and it offered a whole new set of challenges.”

Who else is involved in Big Mistakes?

In addition to starring as Nicky, Levy — who made his feature directorial debut with 2024’s Good Grief — is the showrunner and executive producer of the series. This is his second original scripted series, following the Emmy-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek. Rachel Sennott (I Love LA, Bottoms) co-created and executive produces Big Mistakes. Anne-Marie McGintee executive produces for Not a Real Production Company.

The family crime comedy is the first series from Levy’s deal with Netflix and marks a new chapter for his Not a Real Production Company. “I’m so excited to be bringing this truly chaotic family story to life with Netflix,” Levy said when the show was first announced. “I’m thrilled with the team we’re building both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Taylor Ortega is going to become a household name, and it’s been my life’s mission to get to call Laurie Metcalf ‘mother.’ Looking forward to getting to share this with everyone.”

Where was Big Mistakes filmed?

Though Big Mistakes is set in the fictional New Jersey suburb of Glenview, the series was primarily filmed in Jersey City, New Jersey, which stands in for the Dardanos’ chaotic hometown.

To capture the cartel storyline in Episode 7, production moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, using its coastline and architecture to double as Miami’s waterfront, luxury estates, and yacht life as Nicky and Morgan get pulled even deeper into trouble.

When is the Big Mistakes release date?

Big Mistakes is now streaming on Netflix, following a rollout teased by a staged necklace heist. In the lead-up to the premiere, a mysterious billboard went up on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, featuring a diamond necklace that spelled out 4.9.26, with no context about what the numbers referred to. Later in the evening, an augmented-reality video of the necklace being “stolen” off the billboard was posted on Netflix’s social channels.

Soon after, selfies of Levy and cast members Ortega, Metcalf, Quinn, Kuzum, and Innanen were posted on Netflix’s social media channels. They were each wearing the “stolen” necklace, revealing them to be the culprits behind the heist.

Thankfully, the necklace was returned to its rightful place: The billboard shimmered back to life, revealing that the glittering numerals mark the show’s premiere date of April 9.
