Crack open a cardboard box and hang your favorite painting — Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) are moving in together when Nobody Wants This returns on Oct. 22. The Season 3 trailer reveals the couple is in for some exciting new firsts as they settle into cohabitation.
Throughout the video, you can catch Noah and Joanne sharing sweet moments at home, high-fiving poolside, and brushing their teeth à la a certain iconic Bring It On scene. “We didn’t have to do any more ‘Will they, won’t they?’” says co-showrunner and executive producer Jenni Konner. “We know they are going to, and it was sort of, ‘How are they going to?’”
As the duo seeks to answer that question, they’ll have to make some big decisions. The Nobody Wants This trailer gives fans a peek into Joanne’s conversion process, which is overseen by newly introduced rabbi Eden (Sarah Silverman). Joanne will also have to contend with the gossip spreading around Temple Chai, delivered by newcomer Sebastien (Andrew Rannells). You’ll have to listen to the clip to hear the latest rumor and how Joanne reacts to it. Still, Noah and Joanne are stronger than ever, as the former promises the latter they’re “perfect” together.
So perfect, in fact, that Noah’s mom, Bina (Tovah Feldshuh), is dropping the word “rebbetzin” around Joanne. As Noah explains, that term means “rabbi’s wife.” Clearly, even Bina has accepted Noah and Joanne’s “soulmate” status.
“We feel like there are so many other ways to tell the story of a rom-com without pulling the rug out from under people and creating false obstacles for the couple,” says creator and executive producer Erin Foster. “We wanted this couple to be moving in a forward motion together and having all these big romantic moments you want to see.”
Many of Noah and Joanne’s loved ones are also chasing their love story. Season 3 picks up after the separation of Noah’s brother, Sasha (Timothy Simons), and his wife, Esther (Jackie Tohn). Esther was determined to find herself after Season 2, and one swoony scene in the trailer reveals she may do just that. “Esther starts out so excited about the possibilities, excited about what’s out there for her, and Sasha really doesn’t want to go out there,” Foster says.
But Sasha can’t avoid the pull of the apps forever. Should he “shave his entire body” to get a date, like Joanne’s dad, Henry (Michael Hitchcock), recommends? Or can Sasha’s fun new hat help him charm a potential new paramour?
Meanwhile, the long-simmering romantic tension between Sasha and Joanne’s sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe), seems ready to boil over now that he’s single and available. Despite the new development, Morgan swears she’s going to focus on herself “for once” in her life. Sasha’s response proves just how well he knows her.
“What’s interesting about the two of them is that they’re always navigating how they should be with each other,” says co-showrunner and executive producer Bruce Eric Kaplan. “The curveball of Sasha now being single propels us into ‘OK, we are just friends, but now there’s this unspoken thing that exists.’”
Still, like Morgan says, she has bigger goals than romance in Season 3. She’s investing in herself and her professional future. “Morgan’s passion is lapping Joanne,” Konner jokes. Kaplan adds, “It feels real that, at this juncture in Morgan’s life, she would be like, ‘Okay, how can I become something bigger than I am?’”
