The Pogues are used to being at the bottom of the food chain, but they’ve never been this low.
In the Outer Banks Season 5 trailer, which you can watch right now, John B (Chase Stokes), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) are left to pick up the pieces after losing their best friend JJ (Rudy Pankow), who met his shocking end at the hand of his father, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), in last season’s finale. And their setbacks don’t stop there.

Back in the OBX, traumatized and heartbroken with no money and no home, the gang — including Rafe (Drew Starkey) — hits rock bottom, and the once carefree teens now know they’re not invincible. “In Season 5, we see the most hesitation from John B, not just because of JJ’s death,” Stokes tells Tudum. “He’s accepting the fact that he is a soon-to-be father and that he has responsibilities. The 16-year-old who was lying to DCS about staying with his uncle is now starting to really realize the ramifications and the repercussions of his actions.” But as they’ve shown us time and time again over the series’ first four seasons, you just can’t keep a good Pogue down.

As the trailer continues, they devise a plan to avenge JJ and take back what’s rightfully theirs. “I’m not letting Groff win,” Kiara tells John B. And with the enchanted Blue Crown still at stake, the Pogues’ hope may not be the only thing that gets resurrected this season. Mourning her lost love, Kei reminds her friends, “The legend is that the crown can bring back the dead.” So could JJ return, or is that just the grief talking? The only way to find out is to catch up with Groff, take him down, and confiscate the crown. That means this last treasure hunt has the highest stakes yet.

In the fifth and final season of Outer Banks, which will be filled with redemption and revenge, John B, Kiara, Sarah, Pope, and Cleo aren’t just rising from the ashes. Throughout the action-packed trailer, they’re seen doing dangerous stunts like riding a motorcycle off a cliff, climbing to the top of a tall tower, sailing through storms, getting into knife fights, and setting up explosives. Stokes confirms that Season 5 was “physically, emotionally, and mentally the most demanding.”
