Every heroine knows that the perfect song can elevate any stroll, horseback ride or fleeting, passionate almost-kiss with a rakish viscount. And, sure, Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” doesn’t sound like it would work as a romantic, Regency-era needle drop, but add the string stylings of classical duo Duomo — and a few emotional, furtive glances between Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) and Lord Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) — and Morissette’s angry breakup masterpiece takes on a whole new meaning. Now, following the release of Bridgerton’s second season, Morissette is joining forces with Duomo for an angsty, anguished performance of her 1995 hit.
The video pairs Morissette’s voice and Duomo’s instrumentals with footage of Kate and Anthony meeting in the woods and sharing some charged moments throughout Season 2. (If only you could listen to Morissette’s haunting vocals and Anthony’s impassioned, tortured speech at once, right?)
Bridgerton’s music supervisor, Justin Kamps, told Tudum that he likes reimagining popular music for the show’s instrumental soundtrack. “Even for these songs that are just huge songs that everyone knows, [an instrumental version] still breathes new life and brings them to a new audience, and in a different way,” he said in a March interview. “But pop is where we start, because it fits the style of the show, and it’s often using these super-recognizable songs that just add a lot of joy, which is what pop does in general.”
