Hannah Dodd: It's so weird being able to talk about it now. We've literally, like… We've held this spoiler in for so long.
Victor Alli: For so long.
Hannah Dodd: So it's so weird to now…
Victor Alli: I'd get in trouble by Hannah for saying it just like on a random day. In public places.
[vibrant classical music playing]
Alison Hammond: It's so wonderful seeing you both together, actually, as actors, because, like, I was in this relationship. Your relationship last season, it's a fan favorite. Everyone absolutely loved it. That's why we're so invested in this couple so, so very much. But yeah, this season, things… things are no more. And it's very, very sad, actually. How do you both feel like your characters in the relationship have evolved in Season 4?
Hannah Dodd: They've evolved so much, which I think is what's almost even more devastating is that they've really fought to get themselves to the point that they were in, and they were really comfortable with each other
Alison Hammond: And they were communicating.
Victor Alli: Yeah, yeah.
Hannah Dodd: What I really love about their relationship, A, is just the deep respect in the relationship, and that it wasn't this massive moment where they fell in love like a lot of the other couples. It was a little bit more grounded in reality maybe, and maybe an experience that, like, a lot more people have. But, um, you know, they really… It wasn't that they got married and it was like "Tick, done." They still had to work on their relationship throughout. They were never done. But I guess they are now.
Victor Alli: Yeah, thanks. Thanks for the reminder.
Alison Hammond: You did so well. Honestly, John is such a lovely man in everything. I mean, the difficulty with Fran having to… She can't conceive. You're just so kind.
Hannah Dodd: John is so wonderful.
Hannah Dodd: That speech.
Alison Hammond: Episode 6, the last dance ballroom.
Victor Alli: Yeah.
Alison Hammond: Was that emotional when you were filming, for you two?
Hannah Dodd: When we're under the moon?
Alison Hammond: Yes.
Hannah Dodd: Yeah.
Victor Alli: Yeah.
Hannah Dodd: The thing about me and Victor is when things get a bit much, we get a bit silly.
Alison Hammond: Do you? Do you just laugh it through?
Hannah Dodd: Yeah, yeah. Even the worst scene was the scene where she finds…
Alison Hammond: Oh, it's awful. Heartbreaking.
Victor Alli: That was a funny day.
Hannah Dodd: It was our best day.
Alison Hammond: In what way was it funny?
Hannah Dodd: I think as humans, we just can't handle the awkwardness.
Alison Hammond: Yeah.
Hannah Dodd: So we just get a bit hyper. Like doing somersaults.
Victor Alli: She said that was my best work. She's like, "Victor, that is some of the best death acting." I did nothing.
Hannah Dodd: I kept going up to him, "Want to run-- Don't worry about it."
Alison Hammond: [laughter] Brilliant. So you literally switch it up, switch that energy up. I love that.
Victor Alli: You have to. You don't want everyone to be depressed.
Alison Hammond: When they say "Action," that's when the work starts.
Victor Alli: Yeah, it starts, and then when they take a cut, and we go back to being silly.
Alison Hammond: 'Cause he wasn't really dead.
Victor Alli: Oh… well.
Hannah Dodd: He definitely wasn't behind that camera.
Victor Alli: She'd never know. I wasn't.
Hannah Dodd: Victor was literally looking behind the camera. He was like… [whispers] "Cry."
[laughter]
Victor Alli: Yeah, because she wasn't crying.
Hannah Dodd: I didn't know you were dead yet!
Victor Alli: You're like, "Where's the tears?" You set it up, and get the tear ducts open, and then…
Alison Hammond: It's like The Holiday. Could you not cry?
Victor Alli: Yeah.
Hannah Dodd: She didn't know he was dead yet. There's plenty of crying coming.
Victor Alli: I know. I know.
Alison Hammond: Victor, from doing this, have you learnt anything about your own life? I've learnt how to absolutely sort of communicate, but also, um, not take things seriously.
Alison Hammond: Even death?
Victor Alli: Yeah. Just the moment you start to, um, get quite emotional about certain things that are just sort of fleeting and you stop having fun, and I think just enjoying life and having the joy of that.
Alison Hammond: Who would have thought this job would have brought so much knowledge?
[Victor sighs]
Alison Hammond: It's wonderful. Have you got a favorite scene between your relationship that will always stay there? Because obviously, we're not gonna see you very often now.
Hannah Dodd: The thing is, I don't think people are gonna like it, but we did have a lot of fun with the death scenes.
Victor Alli: I would say that.
Alison Hammond: That was an iconic scene.
Victor Alli: There's loads of videos that we have.
[Alison laughs]
Victor Alli: And, um… Because it could have been like the day I died, the character died, and it's like really solemn and really sort of sad and just, you know, everyone's sort of like in tears.
Alison Hammond: I wonder if it would have been different if it was truly your last day.
Hannah Dodd: Yeah.
Victor Alli: Yeah.
Alison Hammond: Yeah. I think the fact that he was gonna hang around and still doing other scenes, I think that's why you probably didn't.
Hannah Dodd: Your last day was sad.
Victor Alli: Yeah, but then I turn up to the funeral.
Hannah Dodd: Do you know this?
Alison Hammond: No.
Hannah Dodd: He showed up to his own funeral.
Alison Hammond: You didn't. What, just for the day?
Victor Alli: Just for the day. And I wore, like, a kaftan.
[laughter]
Victor Alli: And I just sort of, like, was hiding behind, like, one of the sort of screens. And, like, Luke was saying the speech.
Hannah Dodd: The speech.
Alison Hammond: Oh, that was so good.
Hannah Dodd: Yeah, and all we heard was this one.
Victor Alli: I was like, "You all right, guys?" [chuckles]
Hannah Dodd: He's like, "You couldn't do this without me, could you?" And everybody went…
Alison Hammond: That is so funny.
Victor Alli: So, yeah. That was kind of the last day.
Hannah Dodd: I think so. It was really close to the end of the season.
Alison Hammond: Did you just tell all the producers, "I'm gonna go on set"?
Victor Alli: But they didn't say anything. I think I told like one person. You didn't even know.
Hannah Dodd: No. You'd mentioned it. He was talking a lot about going to the funeral.
Alison Hammond: How was it seeing your own funeral, babe? Interesting?
Victor Alli: It was all right.
[laughter]
Victor Alli: It's all right.
Alison Hammond: It's all right. People mourning.
Victor Alli: Yeah. Sad.
Hannah Dodd: Enough tears.
Victor Alli: Enough tears. So I know that when I do die, I know what to expect.
Alison Hammond: Yeah. You've been there, done that.
Victor Alli: Been there, done that. Um, yeah, it was quite sad, but it was nice to sort of see all the family and friends gathered.
Alison Hammond: Thank you for looking after these precious characters. You've done such an amazing job.
