In these long, hot, weird days of late summer, there are only so many things left to do. You could go for a drive, for one, and stick your face out the window, letting your tongue flap in the breeze. You might try running around the backyard if someone is willing to throw a ball for you. And there’s always finding a nice shady spot somewhere, maybe in the middle of the kitchen floor, right where everyone walks, to nap all afternoon.
But the best way to ride out the dog days of summer? With a canine-themed stream. There are plenty of options to get your tail wagging: Try a new adult animated comedy about a dog’s big day, a pair of documentaries to help you get closer to what’s happening in your pet’s brain, or a TV classic about one of the most beloved pups in pop culture history. Go ahead, you deserve a treat!
Another trial of a social experiment. Season 2 of Love Is Blind: UK has now arrived, with a new crew of single Brits trying to find connection through the walls of the pods. Not seeing it? Reexamine a piece of reality-TV history with the new docuseries Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser, in which The Biggest Loser’s former producers and competitors open up about the dark side of the weight-loss show. Not fit for your weekend? Try something completely different with the documentary–visual album Songs from the Hole. The innovative and inspiring film, directed by Contessa Gayles in collaboration with musician JJ’88 and producer richie reseda, was conceived while JJ’88 was incarcerated and centered around music he composed and recorded during that time.
Get Fixed. Released just this week, the adult animated comedy (from Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky) leans a little raunchier than the dog cartoons you grew up with: Adam Devine provides the voice of Bull, a dog who finds out one fateful day that he is scheduled to be neutered the next. With just 24 hours before the big fix, he gathers up his canine friends (voiced by Idris Elba, Fred Armisen, and more) for one last wild day.
Think like a dog, with the help of some docs. First, 2024’s Inside the Mind of a Dog takes you exactly there. Directed by Andy Mitchell and narrated by Rob Lowe, the film offers insights into the history of dogs and recent discoveries about how their brains work. Then follow it up by spending some time with a fellow human who really speaks their language: The 2021 docuseries Canine Intervention follows Oakland dog trainer Jas Leverette as he takes on some tough cases — but still manages to break through.
Start investigating. Over two seasons of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, teen sleuths Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma meddle in one spooky mystery after another, all with the help of their Great Dane pal Scooby-Doo. Originally airing from 2010 to 2013, this early-aughts incarnation of the animated franchise (begun by Hanna-Barbera in 1969) serves up sweet nostalgia for many viewers and an introduction to a cartoon classic for others. Zoinks!
To get real. The sly drama UnREAL, created in 2015 by Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, takes place behind the scenes of a reality dating show, where a talented young producer (Shiri Appleby), encouraged by her intense boss (Constance Zimmer), manipulates the contestants into stirring up high drama. Next week, all four seasons will go off the air.
