Greetings, Earthlings! This past Tuesday brought Earth Day, our annual reminder that we live on a planet so beautiful, so dynamic, and so genuinely awe-inspiring that it gives us cause to celebrate for 365 more days (approximately), at which time we will receive a fresh reminder that our home deserves our deepest respect and gratitude.
So in the aftermath of Earth Day and in this lovely time of year, when spring is blooming all the more and summer looming ever closer with each passing day, why not honor the outside, from inside? Stream an urgent underwater documentary, go above ground with some stories of self-discovery amid nature, or traverse the whole globe with three series that zoom out on our astonishing world. And if none of these picks touch your heart, there’s no reason you can’t just call up an old favorite instead — recycling is always an Earth-friendly move.
It’s You. The fifth and final season of Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble’s psychological thriller, based on the novel series by Caroline Kepnes, sees Penn Badgley come back for his final turn as the obsessive lover-stalker-killer Joe Goldberg. Not for You? Try wreaking some HAVOC instead. Tom Hardy stars in Gareth Evans’ years-in-the-making action thriller as a jaded detective who finds himself entangled in the intrigues of a ruthless criminal underworld. Don’t want to have to fight dirty? Then just play hard with Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, a three-part docuseries that follows the champion tennis player as he turns 21, makes his Olympic debut, and more.
Take the plunge. More than two-thirds of the Earth is covered in water, so underwater ecosystems deserve some love this week, too. Jeff Orlowski’s documentary Chasing Coral, which premiered at Sundance in 2017, investigates the rapid decline of coral reefs. Alongside breathtaking footage of coral reefs, the documentary features scientists, divers, and photographers as they join forces in a movement to save the diverse, elaborate, endangered ecosystems.
Find yourself in the outdoors. In 2024’s Penelope, an eight-episode coming-of-age drama series created by Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn, a teenage girl (Megan Stott), overwhelmed and uninspired by modern society, escapes into the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest, where she creates a life of her own choosing. Afterward, fall into an outdoorsy love story with Happiness for Beginners: Based on Katherine Center’s novel of the same name, Vicky Wight’s 2023 romantic comedy stars Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes as a pair of old family friends who are unexpectedly reunited on an Appalachian Trail survivalist course.
Explore a little. Fill the weekend with docuseries that travel all over the world to take a closer look at our extraordinary home. Start with both seasons of the Sir David Attenborough-narrated Our Planet (from 2019 and 2023), which visits various ecosystems on Earth — and notes the damage we’ve done to it. Follow it with a tour of Our Great National Parks all over the globe, with President Barack Obama serving as narrator and guide in the 2022 limited series. And finally, tie it all together by meeting some of the many life-forms with which we share our planet and are inextricably connected; narrator Cate Blanchett makes the introductions in 2024’s Our Living World.
… to feel your Spidey senses tingle. Make it a Spider-weekend with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy — 2002’s Spider-Man, 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3 — all starring Tobey Maguire as the webslinger (a.k.a. Peter Parker) and Kirsten Dunst as his beloved Mary Jane. Top off the marathon with a trip to the Spider-Verse in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the 2024 animated film directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, with Shameik Moore providing the voice of the hero (a.k.a. Miles Morales). Next week, they’ll all swing away.
