The Abandons ain’t your father’s Western — it’s your mother’s. In the trailer for the new drama series, feuding matriarchs Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson) and Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey) face off for control of the frontier.

To keep up with the rapid expansion of a Washington Territory settlement, Constance — a widow who has used her business savvy and charm to grow the mining fortune she inherited from her late husband — sets her sights on Jasper Hollow, a fertile ranch that’s home to Fiona and her adopted children, Elias (Nick Robinson) and Dahlia Teller (Diana Silvers), Albert Mason (Lamar Johnson), and Lilla Belle (Natalia Del Riego). Known as the Abandons, this found family of orphans and outcasts makes it very clear: Their home is not for sale.
“My family are five abandoned souls, now kin. God gave us this home, and only God can take it away,” Fiona tells Constance. But, as the trailer above shows, Constance doesn’t follow anyone’s will but her own — not even God’s. So a battle ensues.

As the determined mothers fight to secure and defend their legacies, livelihoods are threatened, lives are endangered, and new bonds are formed. Amid burning land and loose livestock, Elias strikes up a star-crossed romance with Constance’s daughter Trisha (Aisling Franciosi), causing even more tension between the two families. “This flirtation ends badly for everyone,” Trisha’s brother Garret (Lucas Till) warns in the trailer, but as it continues, their connection is revealed to be much more serious — and so too is the forbidden relationship’s potential fallout.
The Abandons is now streaming, only on Netflix.
