Heads are turning — but there’s no need to freeze — because the Squid Game (Let’s Play) EP is officially here. Inspired by our most watched series, the new EP, released via Casablanca Records, features “Squid Game (Let’s Play),” by Alok; “Way Back Then (Squid Game Remix),” by Cheat Codes; “The Flower Blooms,” by TOKiMONSTA; and “Squid Game (acapella),” by MayTree.
“As a Korean American, seeing this type of representation paired with boundary-breaking acceptance is important for Asian minorities living in Western societies. That being said, after watching [Squid Game] I felt inspired to write something unique and tied to my Korean roots,” TOKiMONSTA, Korean American record producer and DJ, tells Netflix. TOKiMONSTA also revealed the inspiration behind the track: “In Korean, the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ moment is based on a Korean game I grew up with — the words actually saying, ‘The hibiscus flower is blooming/blossoming.’ I created a fun song, using my own voice to sing the lyric in Korean.”
Although the Squid Game premise is dark and gruesome, fans of the show have found lighter ways to enjoy its soundtrack — from parodies to even rap songs. The new EP opens up with Alok’s haunting, yet energizing track. A mashup of the “Pink Soldiers” theme and “The Flower Blooms,” the song’s eerie melody is paired with upbeat EDM sounds. Perhaps the Squid Game players would’ve benefited from a dance party to ease the tension. Other tracks, such as MayTree’s acapella arrangement, adds a playful and whimsical spin to the series’ theme song. If there’s anything we know about the show, it’s that the Squid Game EP is about to be killer. (Just not in a deadly way.)
