Even before she became one herself, Penelope Featherington always had a fondness for the Bridgertons. Her dearest friend is Eloise Bridgerton and, when we first meet her, she quietly holds a torch for Eloise’s older brother, Colin Bridgerton. Now, she counts herself among the family — and is the mother of a little lord herself. Penelope also happens to hold the most powerful pen in Mayfair.

Writing anonymously as Lady Whistledown gives Penelope an influential voice, allowing her to captivate the ton and draw the attention of Queen Charlotte — a rare form of agency for a young woman with limited social standing. Over time, Penelope becomes more aware of the weight of her words and the consequences they carry, both for others and for herself.

Across the series, she grows more deliberate in how she navigates secrecy, influence, and connection. She marries Colin, but also maintains her newfound sense of self.

Read on to learn more about Penelope’s influence in the Bridgerton universe.

Season 1

  • Penelope Featherington is presented to society alongside her older sisters, Prudence and Philippa, quickly establishing herself as the more introverted of the three.
  • Penelope becomes fascinated by Marina Thompson, a country girl who has moved into the Featherington house for the social season. Marina’s beauty and immediate success in society stand in sharp contrast to Penelope’s own experience of being overlooked.
  • When Penelope discovers Marina is pregnant, she sympathizes with her situation and believes Marina is in love with the child’s father, George Crane. Penelope works to help secure Marina’s future.
  • Penelope grows increasingly distressed when Marina turns her attention to Colin Bridgerton. Penelope’s concern deepens after she learns Varley forged a letter claiming George has married another woman, leaving Marina misled about her prospects.
  • Penelope attempts to dissuade Marina from pursuing Colin and later tries to warn Colin directly as the courtship intensifies. But Colin, trusting Marina, dismisses Penelope’s concerns.
  • The anonymous Lady Whistledown publishes a society column revealing Marina’s pregnancy, abruptly ending her engagement and triggering significant social consequences.
  • In the season finale, the audience learns that Penelope is Lady Whistledown, reframing her actions throughout the season and establishing the conflicts that will color her relationships going forward.

Season 2

  • Penelope begins the season actively writing as Lady Whistledown, using her columns to make pointed comments about Queen Charlotte’s struggle to control the social season, including the delayed naming of the Diamond.
  • Penelope forms a secret partnership with Madame Delacroix, who deduces Penelope’s identity. Together, they create a safer, more efficient system for printing and distributing the society papers.
  • As Eloise grows increasingly focused on uncovering Lady Whistledown’s identity, she meets Theo Sharpe, a printer’s apprentice. As Eloise and Theo get closer, Penelope repeatedly urges her friend to put a stop to the connection — both out of genuine concern for Eloise’s standing in the ton, and to protect her own secret.
  • When the queen’s men follow Eloise to the printer, Eloise becomes a convenient suspect and a potential means of drawing out the real Lady Whistledown. Penelope panics and considers confessing, but fears she will not be believed, and that she could lose the only voice she has.
  • Believing she has no other option, Penelope publishes a Lady Whistledown column exposing Eloise’s association with Theo. The revelation shifts suspicion about Lady Whistledown’s identity away from Eloise because no one would ever publish such scandalous information about themselves. But the column also puts Eloise’s reputation at risk, along with that of the Bridgerton family.
  • In the aftermath, Penelope briefly considers stepping away from the role of Lady Whistledown, but remains attentive to the flow of information around her.
  • At the Featherington Ball, Penelope makes pointed observations about members of the ton, prompting Eloise to reassess her closest friend.
  • Later that evening, Eloise sneaks into Penelope’s room. She discovers Lady Whistledown’s hidden earnings and learns Penelope’s secret identity, leaving their friendship deeply fractured and Eloise devastated by the harm Penelope has caused the Bridgertons.
  • Shortly after, Penelope overhears Colin telling his friends that he would never court her, compounding her isolation.
  • By the end of the season, heartbroken and alone, Penelope chooses to continue writing as Lady Whistledown, reaffirming her commitment to the column and the agency it provides — despite the personal cost.

Season 3

  • Penelope and Eloise remain estranged following the revelation that Penelope is Lady Whistledown, replacing their once-constant companionship with distance and hostility.
  • Seeking stability and a new direction, Penelope approaches the marriage mart with renewed seriousness, updating her wardrobe and hairstyle — changes that draw attention from the ton, including Colin, newly returned from his travels.
  • Colin confronts Penelope about her failure to reply to his letters, revealing how deeply the silence affected him. Penelope, still hurt, challenges him over the dismissive remarks he made about her the previous season.
  • Penelope channels her frustration into a Lady Whistledown column criticizing Colin’s public charm with debutantes, signaling that her pen remains sharp.
  • Colin later apologizes and offers to help Penelope secure a husband. What begins as practical coaching quickly deepens into emotional intimacy. Complicating the matter, however, is the fact that Lady Whistledown’s column criticizing Colin is published and distributed before the relationship is mended. In response, Colin vows to destroy Lady Whistledown — not realizing he’s falling in love with her at the same time.
  • Their bond grows as Penelope reads Colin’s travel journals and praises his writing, offering him the encouragement he has long sought.
  • Acting out of frustration and lingering resentment, Eloise reveals Penelope and Colin’s coaching arrangement to Cressida Cowper, allowing the information to spread through the ballroom.
  • As gossip mounts, Penelope publishes a Lady Whistledown column addressing the rumors. Convinced her prospects are slipping away, she asks Colin to kiss her so she can experience the feeling at least once. He agrees.
  • Penelope later forms a promising connection with Lord Debling, bonding over their shared sense of being outsiders.
  • Cressida also pursues Debling, but he ultimately prefers Penelope. Before formally asking for Penelope’s hand, Debling confronts her about her lingering feelings for Colin. Unsatisfied with Penelope’s answer, Debling withdraws before proposing.
  • Heartbroken, Penelope leaves the ball, only for Colin to follow her into her carriage. During the ride, he confesses his love, and she shares her long-held feelings. A passionate moment ensues, and Colin immediately proposes marriage.
  • Alarmed by the sudden engagement, Eloise insists Penelope must finally tell Colin the truth about Lady Whistledown.
  • Penelope attempts to confess but is repeatedly interrupted. Before the truth can come out, Cressida publicly claims to be Lady Whistledown, leaving Penelope shaken.
  • Eloise urges Penelope to let Cressida take credit and abandon the role of Lady Whistledown. When Cressida shows up to a ball to publicize her harmful column about the Bridgertons, Penelope and Eloise realize one final (and real) Lady Whistledown column is necessary to stop the damage.
  • Noticing his fiancée’s sudden flight from the ball, Colin follows Penelope. He doesn’t realize he is trailing her right to the printer, and discovers that the love of his life is actually his sworn enemy, Lady Whistledown. Colin feels betrayed by Penelope’s secrecy, and by Eloise’s silence.
  • Despite the revelation, Colin and Penelope marry. Their relationship remains strained as Colin struggles with anger, jealousy, and hurt. Their mothers notice and are concerned for the newlyweds.
  • After a Lady Whistledown column clears the Bridgertons of Cressida’s lies, Queen Charlotte becomes convinced the writer is connected to the family and presses Lady Whistledown to reveal herself.
  • Cressida attempts to blackmail Penelope, and lingering questions about the Featheringtons’ finances threaten their standing, so Penelope makes a decision.
  • Penelope confesses to Queen Charlotte that she is Lady Whistledown, and later publicly reveals herself to the ton at Prudence and Philippa’s ball.
  • Impressed by Penelope’s composure, the queen chooses not to shut down Lady Whistledown, neutralizing Cressida’s leverage and stabilizing the Featherington family’s position in society.
  • Witnessing Penelope’s courage, Colin admits that jealousy contributed to his anger. He chooses to stand beside her as an equal, embracing both her ambition and their marriage.
  • In a flash-forward, we learn Penelope won the Featherington baby — she and Colin welcome a baby boy named Elliot. He is the next Lord Featherington.

Season 4

  • The queen takes a special interest in what Penelope writes as Lady Whistledown this social season, even requesting a live recitation of the next installment.
  • Penelope attends Violet’s masquerade ball in a blonde wig, hoping no one will uncover her identity. But after masks are removed, the eager debutantes fawn over Penelope in the hopes of having Lady Whistledown name them the diamond of the season. But the queen decides to name Benedict the suitor of the season instead.
  • Penelope and Queen Charlotte enter into a wager over whether Benedict will marry this social season. Penelope believes such a development is impossible, while the queen is sure he will.
  • Benedict enlists Penelope’s help in finding his mysterious Lady in Silver by featuring his search in her column.
  • Francesca confides in Penelope about the trouble she’s having reaching her “pinnacle,” seeking marital advice. Penelope offers guidance and reassurance, strengthening their bond as sisters-in-law and friends.
  • As Lady Whistledown, Penelope writes about an affair between a member of the ton, Lord Hiscox, and his mistress, Virginia. The author is then confronted by Virginia, who accuses Penelope of destroying her carefully laid plans and ruining her reputation.
  • Shaken by the confrontation with Virginia and feeling the burden of her influence as Lady Whistledown, Penelope tells the queen that she plans to step back from her column, and announces her retirement in a Lady Whistledown installment delivered at Lady Penwood’s ball.
  • Queen Charlotte accepts Penelope’s resignation, allowing her to finally step back from the role of Lady Whistledown for good.
  • Penelope starts working on her own novel. In the midst of writing, she is shocked to learn someone has published a new column as Lady Whistledown.

Notable scenes

Penelope and Eloise’s first fight in Season 1, Episode 4, “An Affair of Honor” (42:04–43:08)

Why it’s memorable: Penelope and Eloise clash for the first time when a conversation about Lady Whistledown turns unexpectedly personal. While Eloise dismisses gossip culture and the women who participate in it, Penelope pushes back — defending Whistledown and, for the first time, asserting her own perspective. The exchange is brief but telling, revealing Penelope’s emerging confidence and exposing her intense attachment to Whistledown. Though the moment passes quickly, it marks an early fracture in their bond and quietly foreshadows the far more devastating rift to come.

Lady Whistledown is revealed in Season 1, Episode 8, “After the Rain” (1:06:18–1:06:50)

Why it’s memorable: The identity of Lady Whistledown is not revealed until the fourth book in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novel series, so even book fans didn’t expect the reveal to occur in Season 1. It’s impossible not to gasp when Penelope escapes Queen Charlotte’s men and removes her hood from the safety of her speeding carriage.

The big fight with Eloise in Season 2, Episode 8, “The Viscount Who Loved Me” (52:24–56:13)

Why it’s memorable: This is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in all of Bridgerton. Penelope’s secret is discovered by one of the people that she’s hurt the most by writing as Whistledown, and it destroys her most valuable relationship. Eloise doesn’t just eviscerate their friendship; she threatens to destroy everything that Penelope has built by writing the Whistledown column. It’s terrible to see two friends tear into each other in these scenes.

Penelope stands up to Colin in Season 3, Episode 1, “Out of the Shadows” (39:08–40:25)

Why it’s memorable: Season 3 is all about Penelope finding her confidence, but it starts before Colin begins giving her flirting lessons. She stood up to Eloise at the end of Season 2, and continued the streak by confronting Colin about the terrible things he said about her at the previous season’s Featherington Ball. Penelope may love Colin, but she still wasn’t willing to accept his disrespect.

Penelope and Colin share their first kiss in Season 3, Episode 2, “How Bright the Moon” (45:30–48:01)

Why it’s memorable: Although Penelope is sad and afraid she will never find a husband, she still musters the courage to ask for the thing she’s always wanted: a kiss from Colin. And her boldness is rewarded. While Penelope is the one who requested the kiss, it’s Colin who leaves feeling deep emotion. He may never have figured out that Penelope Featherington was the one for him had she not dared to make her dreams reality.

Penelope comes out as Lady Whistledown to the entire ton in Season 3, Episode 8, “Into the Light” (51:07–54:00)

Why it’s memorable: In a defining moment, Penelope publicly reveals herself as Lady Whistledown to the entire ton, ending years of anonymity. She acknowledges the power of her words and accepts responsibility for the harm they have caused, delivering the confession with earnest composure rather than defensiveness. Queen Charlotte chooses not to silence her, allowing Penelope to remain part of society. The moment completes Penelope’s arc from overlooked wallflower to a woman who openly claims her voice — and her place — on her own terms.

Penelope is confronted about what she writes as Lady Whistledown in Season 4, Episode 5, “Yes or No” (20:45–22:26)

Why it’s memorable: Penelope’s role as Lady Whistledown already caused a major rift with BFF Eloise because of the things she’d written in the past, and her society papers almost ended her marriage to Colin even before it began. So when Penelope writes about an affair afoot in the ton and is confronted by the mistress she named, she begins to reconsider why she’s still writing the column. “Everyone may have been speculating, but Whistledown made it real,” the wronged mistress tells Penelope. “It is your quill that has ruined me.”
