This article contains major character or plot details.

Colin Bridgerton is the third son of the Bridgerton family, known for his warmth, sensitivity, and instinctive kindness. Frequently described by his mother, Violet, as thoughtful and empathetic, Colin often acts with courtesy and a desire to do right by others.

On the series, he has grappled with restlessness and a search for purpose, spending extended periods traveling abroad and writing about his experiences. While Colin presents an easy confidence in social settings, the show repeatedly reveals an underlying uncertainty about who he wants to be and how he wishes to live.

Over time, particularly in Season 3, that self-reflection led him to recognize his long-standing feelings for his neighbor and close friend Penelope Featherington, marking a turning point in his personal growth and his understanding of romance.

Read on to learn more about the Bridgerton who found love where he least expected it.

Season 1

  • Colin is drawn to Marina Thompson, a Featherington cousin newly arrived in Mayfair during the social season.
  • Colin pursues Marina earnestly, though the match is widely dismissed because of his youth.
  • Marina, who arrived in Mayfair secretly pregnant, responds to Colin’s kindness and idealism, seeing him as honorable, genuine, and caring.
  • Penelope Featherington, who harbors long-standing feelings for Colin, is alarmed by the relationship and tries to intervene, knowing Marina is deceiving him.
  • Colin publicly announces his intention to marry Marina at Queen Charlotte’s luncheon, signaling his commitment.
  • Afterward, Lady Whistledown publishes a column revealing Marina’s pregnancy, abruptly ending the engagement and humiliating Colin.
  • Marina leaves Mayfair with Sir Philip Crane, and Colin reckons with the betrayal and the blow to his romantic idealism.
  • In the aftermath, Colin decides to travel abroad, seeking distance from the scandal and a chance to redefine himself beyond the failed courtship.

Season 2

  • Colin Bridgerton returns to London after extended travels abroad, eager to share his experiences and observations.
  • His family shows polite interest, but Penelope Featherington listens closely and encourages him, particularly when it comes to his reflections and his writing.
  • Despite his time away, Colin has not put his past with Marina Thompson behind him. When he learns she lives near Aubrey Hall, he seeks her out to get closure.
  • Marina says their imagined future was a fantasy and that she has moved on, forcing Colin to confront his immaturity.
  • Later, Penelope overhears Colin tell a group of gentlemen at the Featherington Ball that he would never court her, which deeply hurts her and marks a turning point in their relationship. Colin, at this time, has no idea Penelope knows about his remark.

Season 3

  • Colin returns from traveling abroad with a more confident, flirtatious manner and quickly reconnects with Penelope. He’s stung that she didn’t respond to his letters while he was away.
  • After Penelope gets a style makeover and shows it off at a ball, she confronts Colin about overhearing that he would never court her. Penelope leaves and writes a Lady Whistledown column critiquing Colin’s performative charm, underscoring the tension between his new persona and his true self.
  • The next day, Colin seeks out Penelope and apologizes for what he said. To make amends, he offers to help her find a husband. Penelope accepts, and their friendship is reaffirmed.
  • However, Penelope’s column has already gone to the printer. So Lady Whistledown’s cutting comments about Colin are distributed across Mayfair, souring him on the mysterious scandal-sheet writer.
  • Colin begins coaching Penelope for the marriage mart, making her more confident with eligible suitors. Their arrangement becomes the subject of gossip, drawing public scrutiny.
  • When Penelope asks Colin to kiss her out of despair over her prospects, he agrees — and the moment makes Colin confront his attraction to his long-time friend.
  • Penelope forms a promising courtship with Lord Debling, prompting Colin to recognize his jealousy and fear of losing her.
  • Debling questions Penelope at a ball about her feelings for Colin and chooses not to propose, sensing her uncertainty.
  • Colin follows Penelope after the ball and confesses his love during a carriage ride. The shared romantic admission propels them into a passionate encounter. An avowed gentleman, Colin proposes marriage the moment the carriage door opens.
  • Although overjoyed, Colin becomes unsettled by Eloise’s reaction to the engagement. The next day, he defends Penelope after overhearing Portia Featherington disparage the engagement, firmly declaring it a love match.
  • After Cressida Cowper claims to be Lady Whistledown, Colin grows suspicious. He follows Penelope and discovers that she’s the true author.
  • Colin confronts Penelope and struggles with feelings of betrayal, jealousy, and hurt, particularly over the harm Whistledown has caused his family.
  • Despite the strain, Colin and Penelope marry. When Queen Charlotte confronts the Bridgertons, suspicion intensifies about Whistledown’s identity.
  • Cressida attempts to blackmail Penelope, escalating the threat to her marriage and family.
  • With the support of her mother, Penelope reveals herself publicly as Lady Whistledown at the season’s final ball. Her honesty earns Queen Charlotte’s approval, neutralizing the scandal.
  • Witnessing Penelope’s courage, Colin acknowledges his own insecurities and chooses to stand beside her as an equal, embracing both her ambition and their partnership.
  • In a flash-forward, we meet Colin and Penelope’s son, Elliot, the new Lord Featherington.

Season 4

  • New parents Colin and Penelope haven’t let their passion wane, taking advantage of every carriage ride to keep the flame of their connection alive.
  • Colin reveals he enjoys a monthly culinary outing around London with his Featherington brothers-in-law.
  • During a conversation with Benedict at the gentlemen’s club, Colin loudly proclaims that he’s never had an interest in taking a mistress since he’s so blissfully happy with Penelope and their marriage.
  • Benedict, Colin, and Penelope’s brothers-in-law give relationship advice to Gregory, who has a crush — but Benedict takes it to heart as well.
  • Colin is a loving husband to Penelope, encouraging her as she grapples with the pressures of being Lady Whistledown. He ultimately supports her decision to step down from the column and pursue her own happiness.
  • Like Penelope, he’s shocked to learn someone has taken over the Lady Whistledown mantle.

Notable scenes

Colin dismisses courting Penelope in Season 2, Episode 8, “The Viscount Who Loved Me” (58:53–59:14)

Why it’s memorable: At the Featherington Ball, Colin casually tells a group of gentlemen that he would never court Penelope, unaware that she’s within earshot. The offhand remark lands with unexpected cruelty, especially coming from someone typically defined by kindness. For Penelope, it’s a devastating confirmation of her fears; for Colin, it becomes a defining misstep that later forces him to confront how little he understood his own feelings.

Colin has an amorous dream about Penelope in Season 3, Episode 3, “Forces of Nature” (0:30–1:43)

Why it’s memorable: Penelope has been the one fantasizing about Colin up to this moment. This scandalous dream is the first sign that Colin is starting to return her feelings.

The carriage scene in Season 3, Episode 4, “Old Friends” (44:30–51:00)

Why it’s memorable: After a charged evening, Colin follows Penelope to her carriage, where years of unspoken feelings finally surface. He confesses his love, and the moment confirms that their affection is mutual. The scene is the emotional midpoint of Season 3, transforming a long-standing friendship into a sultry romantic partnership that redefines both characters’ trajectories.

Colin teaches Penelope to see herself the way he does in Season 3, Episode 5, “Tick Tock” (15:24–21:35)

Why it’s memorable: The carriage scene was definitely steamy, but Colin takes it to a whole new level when he and Penelope are fully intimate for the first time. When Colin and Penelope first arrive at their new home, she isn’t entirely sure her fiancé is in love with her. But he more than reassures her: Colin places Penelope in front of a mirror and explains everything he loves about her. It’s not just sexy — it’s also empowering, and it proves why Colin is such a worthy romantic lead.

Colin confronts Penelope about being Lady Whistledown in Season 3, Episode 7, “Joining of Hands” (0:30–01:25)

Why it’s memorable: Colin is over the moon about his relationship with his wife-to-be until he realizes she’s his best friend (Penelope) and his sworn enemy (Lady Whistledown). Colin feels betrayed by Penelope’s secret, and it’s written all over his tear-stained face when he confronts her about all the damage she has done as Whistledown.

Colin realizes that Penelope and Whistledown cannot be separated in Season 3, Episode 8, “Into the Light” (57:21–59:50)

Why it’s memorable: Colin and Penelope’s relationship is in doubt when he finds out that she is Lady Whistledown. He thinks they only have a chance at happiness if she can put down her quill forever. But Colin sees the light when Penelope comes clean to the ton at the final ball of Season 3. She gives an eloquent speech that reminds Colin that he’s always been in love with Penelope and her words. He tells her that he loves her for all of her, and he’s so proud to be with a woman so brave and so accomplished. These two are going to have a great partnership because they support each other in all of their endeavors.
