On July 22, 1997, Eiichiro Oda’s ONE PIECE debuted in the Weekly Shōnen Jump anthology magazine. Over the past 26 years, the beloved manga has been turned into a long-running anime series, 15 animated films, 40 video games — and now, its first live-action adaptation out on Netflix Aug. 31.
Ahead of the show’s launch, you can now watch two official trailers for the upcoming live-action series, read Oda’s letter to fans, and dive into new images taken from the show.

In the trailer above, we meet Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), a rubber-skinned teenager who sets out to become King of the Pirates. As he conquers the sea, Luffy recruits a ragtag crew of misfits to join him onboard, including Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero), and Sanji (Taz Skylar). Calling themselves the Straw Hats, Luffy and his gang sail from island to island in search of the mysterious One Piece treasure. Of course, no adventure is smooth sailing. On their quest, the Straw Hats run into dangerous rivals who stand in their way of hitting the jackpot.
You can watch ONE PIECE at 12am PT/ 4pm JST on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Since its launch, the fan-favorite franchise has sold 516.5 million worth of books — making Oda the 10th bestselling fiction writer of all time. As he writes in his letter to fans, “It’s already fun seeing the flurry of reactions after each release of information. And the very fact that adapting ONE PIECE into live-action was conceived seven years ago is wild!”
Serving as an executive producer on the new series, Oda’s played an important role in the entire adaptation process, from casting to post production. “By now, I just love this production team and the cast so much that I can’t wait for them to get the acclaim they deserve from everyone around the world,” he writes. Fans of the anime will also hear some familiar voices in the new series because the original ONE PIECE voice actors will reprise their roles for the Japanese version.
ONE PIECE also stars Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, and Chioma Umeala. The series is created in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda are writers, executive producers, and showrunners, with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements joining Oda as executive producers.
