Natasha Lyonne is the indisputable star of the existential-crisis comedy Russian Doll, which returned for its long-awaited Season 2 on April 20. There’s a reason her character’s screed against the least lovable day of the week (Monday, naturally) has become a cult-classic meme. But no three words will bring a fan back to the topsy-turvy world of Russian Doll quite like “sweet birthday baby,” offered up over and over again by Maxine (Greta Lee), the aqua eyeliner–sporting best friend to Lyonne’s Nadia Vulvokov and host of Season 1’s central birthday bash.
“Sweet birthday baby” is a party as a sentence — and, increasingly throughout Season 1, a portent of doom. Maxine is Russian Doll’s unwitting constant, offering up both chicken and cigarettes to her party guests. Even as the revelers disappear from the party, and as Nadia is transported into an endless time loop that always starts at the hostess’s glimmering bathroom door, there is Maxine, dancing alone in her Yeshiva school turned-apartment, smoking a drug-laced cigarette. “I am the party,” she drawls. She’s right.
