This article contains major character or plot details.

Rob and Michaella’s connection wasn’t instant, but, like a cigarette lit off the gas stove late on Christmas Eve, what’s really so bad about a slow burn? Until, of course, it picks up heat and explodes amid a St. Patrick’s Day party in the latest episodes of Love Is Blind Season 11.

“I really felt like I could understand his heart,” Michaella tells Tudum, about her relationship with Rob. “He really felt like someone that would be a good companion to me.” But the bond they formed and the future they were building — filled with raucous family parties, roast beef sandwiches in bed, and lots of laughs — all came crashing down when Rob self-destructed at the pod squad mixer back home in Boston. “Him behaving that way just felt like such a betrayal to me.”

Rob acknowledges he let his emotions and the pressure of the experiment get the better of him, and he’s still sorting through the fallout of the night that ended their engagement. “I probably should have handled it in a more mature way and not crashed out,” he says. Keep reading to hear from both Michaella and Rob about their journey together and what led to his “meltdown.” Plus, make sure to tune into the reunion on Nov. 8 to find out where the two stand today.

A group of people socialize in a warmly lit restaurant or bar with stained glass windows, candles, and drinks. Some stand greeting each other, while others sit at a table, creating a lively, friendly atmosphere.

How did Michaella really feel about that dinner with Rob’s friends?

Michaella says she felt an abrupt “vibe shift” in Rob when the hang with his friends went sour. “I was just taken off guard, and I did expect him to protect me in those moments when his friends were a little objectifying.” But Michaella was trying hard to “be one of the guys.”

“It was very important to him that I got along with his friends, and it was important to me. I have a twin brother, and I worked for my uncle’s plumbing company, so I can hang, but it was disrespectful on his part to not shut down some of the conversations.” Rob, though, didn’t seem to feel like she needed help. “She naturally fit in. Everyone loved her. I mean, my friend group protects people that I love, so it’s one of those deals, like ‘Welcome to the family.’”

Beyond what his friends had to say, however, Michaella was bothered by Rob’s words to and about her at dinner. “His cheers was just really fucked up, for lack of better terms,” she says about him mentioning an off-camera incident in which he felt like she had accused him of being “aggressive.” “While he’s doing it, I’m sitting there thinking to myself, ‘What are you doing? You just met my parents. I have shown you the most I’ve ever shown anybody about myself and been so patient and kind. How could you be saying these things in front of your friends and on camera?’”

Rob is the first to admit that he found the filming process to be grueling and that he didn’t handle it as well as other participants did. “I was getting frustrated with the cameras in my face constantly,” he shares. But when Michaella said privately that she felt he was acting aggressively, he “took offense to it.” “Never in my life would I be aggressive towards a girl,” says Rob. So, when he introduced his fiancée to his closest friends, he wanted them to back that up. “This is so sensitive and nothing I ever wanted to be on camera,” Michaella says. “But his paranoia put it there.”

What set Rob off at the mixer?

While Rob seemed bothered to watch Michaella reunite with her past pod connection, Matt, he says his actions that night were due to feeling like everyone was being “fake,” rather than jealousy. “I thought everything was bullshit,” Rob says. “I know that people found love, but I thought at the moment, it’s just all for the show. It’s all for the camera.”

The reality of the situation — and his mother going wedding dress shopping for a wedding that may not end in “I do” — started to sink in at the party. “I felt it crashing down,” he says. “I was letting everyone down.” Rob’s anxiety was only magnified by the fact that he had recently lost his father and he didn’t want his family dealing with more stress. “I could have handled things a little bit differently towards the end, but there was a lot of anxiety in my life, a lot of pressure,” he says. According to Michaella, the only explanation she got for why Rob had that “little meltdown” was that “this wasn’t the environment for me.” But she has trouble squaring that, especially because she repeatedly told him they could leave the experiment at any time.

How did Michaella and Rob’s breakup unfold?

When Rob and Michaella got back to their shared apartment after the mixer, he packed his stuff and left. Rob recalls that there was no conversation about calling off the engagement. “It wasn’t really a discussion. We separated, and then it was just over.”

According to Michaella, Rob did finally reach out after a couple of days, and they talked on the phone for almost two hours. He told her the crash-out had nothing to do with her, but she just couldn’t believe it. “I was like, ‘Well, how am I supposed to take that? It is about me. This whole experience is about you and me, not just you.’”

Reflecting on the experience, Rob emphasizes that he does wish he had stayed “calm” and been more “even-keeled.” “If I hurt somebody, that wasn’t my intent,” he says. For her part, Michaella wishes he had let her help him navigate all that anxiety and possible unprocessed grief that had been stirred up through the experiment. “He had the right partner for that. I can hold all of that for him, but I wanted to hear what he was experiencing,” she says. “Rob is a really great guy, and I think he has a heart of gold, the best of intentions, and just some work to do on himself.”

Rob agrees. “We’re all human and just have to continue to work towards being better, I guess,” he says. Still, just like his favorite Frank Sinatra song, “My Way,” he was true to himself throughout the experiment. “I know who I am when I look in the mirror in the morning, and if America doesn’t, that’s on them.”
