In The Ultimatum, Shanique Imari lives with Zay Wilson, Rae Williams’ boyfriend, in a trial marriage for three weeks. But since the show wrapped, Williams and Imari have remained close friends.
“I knew I wanted to pursue a friendship with her after the social experiment ended, so I kind of put an emphasis on like, ‘I am not going to grill you about your time with [Wilson]. I want him to tell me, anyway. I want to focus on literally just being your friend,’” Williams explains to We Have the Receipts co-hosts Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Chris Burns. “Ultimately, our friendship just overcame everything else.”
During the podcast, the two women go into detail about their “emotionally mature” approach to The Ultimatum, the dating show where participants decide to get married or break up after a series of trial marriages. Williams and Imari say the premise was so messy, they had to set some ground rules with their partners during filming: Imari says she and boyfriend Randall Griffin expected complete honesty from one another, but only sex was completely off the table. On the other hand, Williams says she and Wilson agreed not to go further than kissing — something she says Wilson wasn’t too keen on enforcing, at first. “At first, Zay was like, ‘Well, let’s just go with the flow,’ ” she says. “Then, as Zay saw my connection with Jake [Cunningham], he was like, ‘Hey, those boundaries we talked about? Yup, nothing past kissing. We’re doing that.’”
Also in this week’s episode, the women explain their casting process, their other potential trial husbands and that epic girls’ night out.
