Rapper and Young, Famous & African star Nadia Nakai usually likes to stay out of the drama. But when castmate Khanyi Mbau tries to set her up with fellow rapper Diamond Platnumz in the series premiere, she gets pulled right in. On this week’s episode of We Have the Receipts, Nakai tells hosts Chris Burns and Lauren Speed-Hamilton that although she wasn’t interested, she still had to let him down easy.
“For me, I was like, ‘I don’t want to offend him, because I still want to work with the guy even though I’m not interested in a relationship.’ You know how it is when you’re a girl in the industry. You don’t want to burn bridges when people want to be romantic and you’re not necessarily reciprocating that, but you wanna be able to still work with the person,” she says. “It kind of blew up in my face. I didn’t handle it as well as I thought I did.”
During the podcast episode, Nakai spills about all things Young, Famous & African, including everything from the casting process to her newest relationship. She also gives her thoughts on Platnumz’s other romantic entanglement — aka that shocking finale love triangle between Platnumz, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his children Zari Hassan, and castmate Andile Ncube — saying she’s surprised Platnumz is trying to hold on to Hassan despite their breakup. “Stop acting like you don’t love this person then,” she says. “Don’t act like you’re not there when you are, and if you are there, then fight for your family!”
Earlier in the episode, host Speed-Hamilton brings on her husband, Love Is Blind Season 1’s Cameron Hamilton, to talk about his newest obsession, Love Is Blind: Japan (“It seemed like a lot of the cast was very genuine about their intentions”), and weigh in on the upcoming series The Ultimatum (“When is an ultimatum ever good for a relationship?”).
