[lively dramatic music playing]
[Colleen Atwood] This season, the costumes were a little more adult and a little bit more sophisticated.
[Mark Sutherland] We wanted to elevate the costumes without losing the essence of the characters.
[CLIP] [Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams] I don't evolve, I cocoon.
[Jenna Ortega] Wednesday wore a lot of jeans in the first season, and this season I've been wearing a lot of skirts and lines are very sharp and precise.
[Mark Sutherland] And also, Wednesday has a new sort of Sherlock Holmes style coat when she's in her detective mode.
[Jenna Ortega] We were all very excited when we saw this coat.
[Colleen Atwood] We kept her in her monochrome world, but in a simpler, more adult way.
[CLIP] [Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair] Oh my God, yes!
[Colleen Atwood] Our inspiration for Enid's clothes was Japanese street style, and we sort of had fun adding a slight New York street vibe.
[Mark Sutherland] We shifted the palette. She's less sugar-coated.
[CLIP] [Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair] [gasps] Stay out of my room, you little creep.
[Mark Sutherland] With a bit more deeper colors, more like jewel colors, but still keeping the essence of Enid.
[CLIP] [Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams] I'm gonna slip into something a little bit more uncomfortable.
[lively intriguing music playing]
[Colleen Atwood] I had this idea for Morticia's dress that was sort of a side drape with a godet in it. I said, "Could I make this red?" Because black on black can get really dense on screen. And once we got the blessing, we made it part of her character.
[Catherine Zeta-Jones] And with Morticia, now we have more time to play. What would she be like when she's just at home? What would she be like if she's out in the wilderness?
[Mark Sutherland] One of my favorite costumes is Morticia at Camp Jericho.
[CLIP] [Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams] ITo what do we owe this ghastly apparition?
[Mark Sutherland] And the pith helmet with the veil, the sunglasses, and the parasol, they just look so great together.
[Catherine Zeta-Jones] Camping's not really her thing, but when she turns up, it's genius.
[CLIP] [Steve Buscemi as Principal Dort] Hester Frump.
[lively haunting music playing]
[Joanna Lumley] A lot of this particular show comes with once you put your character on, wigs and clothes and how you look and how you're made up. And I love, particularly, one of the costumes, which has got a high, sharp, wired collar, so it's always up. Fabulousness, that's all I can say. And the jewelry she wears, everything looks as though it could draw blood.
[CLIP] [Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Hester Frump] Death never takes a holiday, so neither do I.
[Joanna Lumley] I get to wear many, many amazing clothes, so I love it.
[CLIP] [Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams] Was it worth the wait, my darling?
[CLIP] [Luis Guzmán s as Gomez Addams] [speaks Italian] You have outdone yourself.
[Miles Millar] For the gala, we wanted something very operatic and theatrical.
[Alfred Gough] And incorporated masks as well, which was something that allowed us to keep our mystery story going in this kind of Venetian wonderland.
[Mark Sutherland] It was pretty amazing when we first got everybody dressed.
[Colleen Atwood] We did manufacture close to 400 costumes for this.
[Miles Millar] Costumes, I have no idea what the budget was. They didn't tell us. It was just like, Colleen flew to Italy a lot.
[Colleen Atwood] We didn't want it to look like everybody went to a rental house and rented a period dress. So we did our own spin on the 18th century sort of Venetian ball vibe, finding things that were authentic from that period to rent from costume houses, and then combined it with our own creations on the crowd. And then on the principles, we made our own clothes, which really enhanced the process.
[CLIP] [Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams] Yeah. Finally, some originality.
[lively mysterious music playing]
[Mark Sutherland] Wednesday was pretty epic. She just looked so iconic.
[Colleen Atwood] The idea of it was it was a masked ball. But because Wednesday is someone who steps outside the parameters, we just did the sheer eye mask on her. And her costume is really thin silk bobinette, so you can see through it. We really wanted it to be like a vision when she walked in.
[Jenna Ortega] Everyone looks amazing for the gala. It's really, really incredible.
[lively dance music playing]
[Colleen Atwood] For Enid, I wanted to contrast with Wednesday, so I just did like the opposite end of the color spectrum without being in white. She also had to dance in her costume, so there were two versions of it.
[Emma Myers] Filming one, my corset, the string was actually a ribbon, so it looked pretty, but it doesn't actually stretch. And bending sideways and backwards and doing all the stuff we had to do, I couldn't breathe and couldn't move. So when we changed over to the dancing, they swapped out the ribbon for an elastic so it could stretch. It's my favorite costume.
[lively intriguing music playing]
[Colleen Atwood] Figuring out how does Morticia do the 18th century gave me a lot of trepidation. Because her shape is the opposite of that, so we created an exoskeleton to give her that shape.
[Catherine Zeta-Jones] I've known Colleen for over 23 years. We collaborate so well together. And her attention to detail is just sublime.
[Colleen Atwood] I had this headpiece that I'd had in my collection for a long time. I brought it to the first fitting, we put it on and I was like, "Is it too much?" But then, when we got the whole dress and everything together, Catherine goes, "Yeah, where's the headpiece?" [chuckles]
[Mark Sutherland] One of my favorite costumes, apart from the dresses, is Pugsley.
[Colleen Atwood] It's a common sort of costume for a jester, but I thought it would look very, like, dramatic in black and white.
[Mark Sutherland] The process of making that costume is like every single triangle was cut and sewn on, it was patchwork. Perfect for the character.
[whimsical music playing]
[Mark Sutherland] Weems' dress is, like, epic.
[Gwendoline Christie] When it comes to Colleen, there is no greater gift that you can give yourself than say, "Whatever you think." And what Colleen has seen this season is this sort of pastel, beige, glowing effect. So we see something ethereal and otherworldly.
[Colleen Atwood] Of course for her, her ball costume was a blast because it was so over the top. We used all transparent materials that you could see through, layered over each other to give it sort of that quality and the light, almost like the costume lit itself.
[lively dramatic music playing]
[Colleen Atwood] Getting a chance to do those kind of clothes is pretty rare, actually. And it's really great to be able to have the opportunity and the support from production to be able to achieve that.
[Mark Sutherland] It's great to see it all together because you work away and then to see it all in the one place. Yeah, it was really special.
[music swelling]
[CLIP] [Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Hester Frump] Oh, bravo!
