Joe Goldberg Goes from Killer to Detective in the ‘You’ Season 4 Trailer

His name and city might change, but can Joe? Here’s everything you need to know about the new season.

You best start believing in whodunits, Mr. Joe Goldberg. You’re in one.

The first trailer for Part 1 of You Season 4 is here, and it gives us an even better idea of what Penn Badgley’s heartbroken (and now hirsute) romantic is up to in London — you know, besides teaching at a university and running from his past. It turns out Joe isn’t the only modern-day Jack the Ripper in the city, because someone called the “Eat the Rich Killer” is targeting the “circle of privileged douchebags” he’s befriended. Thus, Joe must channel his inner Sherlock Holmes and stop whomever the killer is before they dismember Joe’s scholarly new life. From killer to detective? Well, Joe clearly has the range.

“We're floored by the love that fans worldwide have shown our twisted little love story — thank you! You inspire us to go deeper, and also crazier every season,” showrunner Sera Gamble tells Tudum. “As you know, each season explores a new city and a new ‘you.’ Season 4, set in London, drops Joe into a very different type of thriller: a whodunit murder mystery. “

Grab your passport, watch the trailer above and then continue below to learn everything you need to know about You Season 4.

When doesYou Season 4 premiere?

The latest chapter in Joe’s life is split into two five-episode batches. You Season 4 Part 1 premieres Feb. 9, and Part 2 arrives exactly a month later on March 9.

Is Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) Joe’s new love obsession?

Where did we leave off?

Season 3 began with Joe and his equally murderous wife, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), settling down in the wealthy northern California town of Madre Linda. You’d think a shared hobby would bring the couple closer together, but alas, the two grow further and further apart — especially once Joe finds a new obsession in local librarian and artist Marienne (Tati Gabrielle). Fully aware of what’s going on with Joe, Love warns Marienne to run away before she winds up dead like every other woman in Joe’s life. Love knows her marriage is over, but really takes the whole “till death do us part” thing seriously and starts plotting her husband’s death. But then, in the Season 3 finale, Joe outwits Love, killing her before she can kill him, then fakes his death and heads to France to find Marienne.

What is Season 4 about?

Class is in session.

When the season begins, Joe is living in London as a college professor named Jonathan Moore. “All he wants is to prove he’s not a terrible man, by living quietly as Professor Jonathan Moore, nursing his broken heart and thoroughly minding his own business,” Gamble says.

In the trailer, we see Joe actively resisting the urge to become interested in (read: obsessed with) Charlotte Ritchie’s Kate. (Did you spot the nod to a moment in the Season 1 premiere?) But change is hard. “I do miss having someone out there,” Joe admits in the teaser.

As fans of the show know, each season of You explores and subverts various genres as Joe searches for love. Season 1 was a classic stalker thriller, offering an irreverent take on tried-and-true rom-com tropes; Season 2 had more of a revenge motif and challenged traditional love-interest expectations; and Season 3 threw Joe into a domestic thriller — almost a suburban noir, complete with swinging neighbors. With Season 4,You transforms into a straight-up murder mystery à la Agatha Christie (or maybe Glass Onion), thanks to the Eat the Rich Killer, who knows about Joe’s past and seems very interested in exploiting it — and Joe.

“This mysterious person is awfully curious about ‘Professor Moore,’ threatening Joe and everyone he cares about,” says Gamble. “Sometimes it takes a killer to catch a killer. Hey, Joe did say he wanted to redeem himself... but we'll leave it to you to decide if redemption is possible for a man like Joe Goldberg."

Who is in the You Season 4 cast?

Tati Gabrielle will return as Marienne in Season 4. Whether or not Marienne is happy to see Joe, though, remains to be seen.

Since class and privilege are a couple of the show’s overarching themes, each season usually forces the working class-raised Joe to interact with (and reluctantly befriend) a new group of rich yuppies. And Season 4 is no exception. Although this time around, they’re not only potential victims but also potential killers. Portraying Joe’s posh new social circle are: Charlotte Ritchie (Feel Good), Ed Speleers (Outlander), Tilly Keeper (EastEnders), Lukas Gage (The White Lotus), Stephen Hagan (The Larkins), Ben Wiggins (The Sandman), Niccy Lin (The Great), Eve Austin (ABC Murders), Aidan Cheng (Devils), Dario Coates (Damned) and Ozioma Whenu (The Lark). Check out the gallery below to meet their snooty characters, as well as Nadia, one of Joe’s promising students played by Amy-Leigh Hickman.

1 / 13
Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) A director at an art gallery, Kate is fearsomely smart, independent, suspicious and immensely loyal to her friends. She's especially protective of her best friend, Lady Phoebe. Kate prefers "arrangements" to love, which is why she dates fun but self-centered partier Malcolm. When Malcolm invites Joe, an American outsider of no apparent means, into their privileged world, Kate not only dislikes him, she also strongly suspects something about him is not what it seems.
Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper) As sweet and kind as she is rich, famous and chaotic, Phoebe's every bikini wax has been documented by the tabloids since she was 15 years old. An aristocratic socialite with an avid fan base, Phoebe's true colors show when she's alone with her friends. She's a steadfast cheerleader for them, especially American entrepreneur boyfriend Adam. She's also a wild card: When misfortune strikes, will she rise to the occasion or shatter?
Adam (Lukas Gage) The youngest son of an East Coast magnate, Adam is  famous for failing to meet his family’s standards. He’s a warm party host and fast friend, but underneath that outgoing exterior, he’s hiding a trove of secrets. Determined to prove himself, he takes risky swings, living by the adage that a good businessman does absolutely anything to get richer. Does he love Phoebe, or is he using her? He’s obviously manipulating all his friends — the only question is, how far would he go?
Nadia (Amy Leigh Hickman) A literature major with a love of genre storytelling and the aspiration to be a serious author, Nadia also boasts an outspokenness and intensity that are a perfect cover for her insecurities. She's made some big mistakes in her past, but now, they threaten to destroy her life. She’ll need help to get through it, even if that means turning to the wrong people for aid.
Rhys (Ed Speleers) Rhys is an author whose memoir garnered him acclaim — and pressure to launch a political career. Born into poverty, Rhys had a traumatic early life before going to Oxford and making all the right friends. Now, he moves easily in any social circle, while also seeing through those around him. He doesn't have much time for partying, though he enjoys staying in touch with his eccentric circle of university friends. After all, they were there for him in his troubled youth.
Sophie (Niccy Lin) Sophie has the mind of an entrepreneur in the body of a pampered jetsetter. Sure, it looks like she's lying around in a bikini on social media, but every aspect of her feed represents cannily negotiated, high-end sponsorship deals. Underneath her whimsical exterior, Sophie is a watchful protector of her introverted artist brother, Simon.
Aidan Cheng Simon is impossible to impress and abhors small talk and strangers. The Oxford-educated son of a Chinese technology magnate, Simon proved the world wrong when, despite his wealth and sheltered life, he showed himself to be an artist worthy of acclaim.
Malcolm (Stephen Hagan) Born to privilege, Malcolm is a literature professor who enjoys all the social perks of the job without working very hard. A drug-loving bon vivant, Malcolm's friendliness can tip over into bullying if you resist. He's dating brilliant, successful Kate, which speaks to his own intelligence and maturity. But he's also seeing a few others on the side, which cancels out those bonus points.
Roald (Ben Wiggins) Roald hails from an old aristocratic family whose names are on many an important building around Europe. He is attractive, stylish and possessed of perfect manners, but there's a certain cold calculation to Roald, not to mention rumors of a hidden dark side.
Gemma (Eve Austin) A member of a privileged circle of friends who met at Oxford, Gemma has never given a day's thought to life beyond the next VIP event, fashion show or date. She's a fun friend to party with, but her insular and pampered life has rendered her shockingly tone-deaf and startlingly lacking in empathy towards those of lesser means.
Blessing (Ozioma Whenu) A Nigerian princess with several post-graduate degrees, Blessing is an investor with a passion for cryptocurrency. Wry, fun-loving and unapologetically cliquish with her university friends, her carefree risk-taking in life and business has paid off time and again. What's her secret? She believes we're all living in a simulation, so only fools would stop themselves from doing whatever they want.
Connie (Dario Coates) Connie attended Oxford with Kate and Phoebe's friend group. He is upper-crust, posh — basically, a sportsman gone soft, who also happens to be loud and potty-mouthed. His true loves include betting, horses, drinking and cocaine. It's safe to assume that Connie's never had to face a negative consequence in his life.
Lady Phoebe and Kate.

The rest of the cast includes Sean Pertwee (Gotham) as Vic, Alison Pargeter (Chernobyl) as Dawn, Brad Alexander as Edward and Adam James (I May Destroy You) as Elliot.

Are we going to be tested on this?

Probably... anything is possible with Jonathan Moore.

Will there be a curve?

There’s always a curve on You.
