Joe Goldberg is about to meet the parent in You.
Greg Kinnear (House of Cards, You’ve Got Mail) will guest star in Part 2 of Season 4 as Tom Lockwood, aka the father of Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) latest love interest, Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie). He’s also known for being “the worst man alive,” according to his daughter, at least.

Showrunner Sera Gamble tells Tudum that they cast the affable Emmy Award winner as such a despicable person (Kate literally compares Tom to Attila the Hun) because it’s so against type.
“Similar a little bit to Penn, when I think of Greg Kinnear, I think of a really stand-up guy. He plays the genuinely good guy in the story a lot,” says Gamble, citing the miniseries Black Bird as an example. “He is, and has been for many years, utterly believable in the role of a hero, and those are my favorite actors to cast as villains because it brings a lot of surprise and depth to that.” Plus, Kinnear “is a brilliant actor,” she adds. “We’re all just fans of him.”

As Kate explains to Joe in Episode 4, Tom is an American “activist investor” (read: corporate raider) who has his hands in almost every industry possible, which makes him “one of the most powerful men on the planet.” Although Tom carries his immense power lightly and disarms people with his natural charm and unassailable logic, it’s worth remembering that no one gets that kind of power without some shady dealings — like, in Tom’s case, by cleansing a CEO’s record of sexual assault or making a profit of 400 million pounds after several children developed cancer because of falsified well-water toxicity reports.
"I think he plays that kind of charisma really, really well,” says Ritchie about Kinnear's performance. “He’s a great match at the table with Joe. In many ways, he has that same magnetism and ability to say pretty terrifying things in a very kind of matter-of-fact way.”
Kate is so disgusted with the way Tom makes money that she rejects his last name and wants nothing to do with him. Until, that is, Tom wheedles his way back into his daughter’s life and both she and Joe are forced to deal with him.
Despite Tom’s, um, complicated nature, Joe still wants to make a good impression. But, that isn’t the only thing on Joe’s mind in the back half of Season 4, because there’s still the matter of the Eat the Rich Killer.

🤐 SPOILER ALERT 🤐
At the end of Part 1, London’s new mayoral candidate Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers) reveals to Joe that he’s the infamous murderer terrorizing the city and their well-to-do friend group. Desperate to protect his new life — especially his budding relationship with Kate — Joe is dead set on bringing Rhys to justice despite Rhys’ many overtures of friendship.
“The second half of the season is now going to be very much about the relationship between Joe and Rhys. We shift into a different gear when they can finally just sit down and have a long conversation about what’s really going on,” Gamble previously told Tudum. “It’s not a whodunit. It’s a different kind of serial killer movie where the guy in the passenger seat is just absolutely gleeful about the position he’s put [Joe] in. [The killer] feels no guilt, no shame and thinks it’s silly that you feel those things.”
