If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This principle may just be the best way to sum up the personal philosophy of the zodiac’s most practical and organized sign, the Virgo. Born between Aug. 23 and Sept. 22, Virgos are known for their attention to detail and determined work ethic; they are truly the hustlers of society. You know a character in a show or movie is a Virgo when they take charge, outwit others, and do it all with an elegance that makes it seem effortless.
Of course, they may also be the ones who have mastered their side-eye and who never hold back their opinion. After all, with a perfectionist nature comes the right to judge others just a little.
A show or movie emulates the Virgo psyche when it presents calculation, creativity, and efficiency. Intricate plots, vivid visuals, clever dialogue, determined characters, and even that naturalistic earth sign energy are all indicators that you are watching a Virgo-style production.
Whether you are a Virgo or just a Virgo appreciator, here are a few movie and series recommendations that will get you in the right frame of mind for the season of the harvest maiden. Plus, a spotlight on a few Virgo actors to see the sign in action.

Does it spark joy? It’s the phrase that launched a thousand deep cleans around the world, and the guiding principle to this reality series. Famed declutter expert Marie Kondo works with families and individuals to make space in their homes by taking inventory of what they own and getting rid of anything that isn’t enriching their lives.
Virgo Appeal: Cleanliness, order, practicality, to-do lists

If any sport could be labeled a “Virgo sport” it would most definitely be chess. In this limited series set in the 1950s and ’60s, orphan Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) learns chess from the orphanage custodian. Later, after she is adopted, she enters herself into competitions, quickly rising through the ranks and eventually earning her place among chess’s most elite players. When she’s invited to compete internationally, the pressure and her own compulsive behavior may be her undoing.
Virgo Appeal: Analytical, perfectionism, obsessive curiosity, mental visualization

Virgos are known for their keen perception, so it’s likely they’d appreciate a superpower allowing them to see what others cannot. In this Wes Anderson short film, Henry Sugar (Benedict Cumberbatch) finds a book outlining the process by which one man learned to see without using his eyes. With fierce determination, Henry practices until he too can see what others can’t, and sets out to use his gift in gambling.
Virgo Appeal: Detailed cinematic flair, hard work, intelligent dialogue

There’s an earned confidence that comes with knowing you’re the best at something. Yumeko Kawamoto (Miku Martineau) has confidence in spades and a particular talent for, and addiction to, gambling. Transferring to the exclusive boarding school of St. Dominic’s Prep, Yumeko is uniquely qualified to participate in the school’s hierarchical system, which uses underground gambling to determine the school’s elite student council. Of course, she has her own reasons to make her way to the top.
Virgo Appeal: Single-minded determination, smart superiority, justice-oriented revenge

When a Virgo has their mind set, their powers of concentration are a sight to behold. This kind of focus is what con artist Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) prides himself on, and what he teaches up-and-coming grifter Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie). Together they steal, gamble, and cheat while falling in love. Fast-forward three years later: the couple, now estranged, are reunited when Nicky heads to Brazil for a new scheme only to discover Jess is dating his target.
Virgo Appeal: Masterful hustling, classy fashion, elaborate planning

Known as one of the caretakers of the zodiac, a Virgo is who you want on your side in an emergency. In Marked, Babalwa (Lerato Mvelase) is an ex-police officer and armed vehicle driver in Johannesburg, skilled in keeping her cool in risky situations. She’s also a pious churchgoer and mother to Palesa (Ama Qamata), who has cancer. Without a very expensive surgery, Palesa will die. Driven to desperation, Babalwa allies with some shady criminals to pull off a daring heist, but her skills and morals will be tested to their limits.
Virgo Appeal: Fierce mothering, professional excellence, scrupulous planning

Beyoncé (b. Sept. 4)
She’s the patron saint of Virgos and a force of nature, our Queen Bey. While Beyoncé has played plenty of roles in movies over the years, to truly see her Virgo qualities shine, just press play on this film documenting her 2018 Coachella performance. Her hard work, creativity, and endurance are on display, both behind the scenes rehearsing and through the performance itself, as she puts her heart and soul into her work.

Idris Elba (b. Sept. 6)
With his single-minded obsessiveness, Detective Chief Inspector John Luther embodies one of Virgo’s darker traits. Actor Idris Elba likely draws from his own Virgo nature to power his critically acclaimed performance of the dedicated and tortured detective. In this film, a follow-up to the five-season series, a new, ruthless, and wealthy serial killer, David Robey (Andy Serkis), taunts Luther and gets him imprisoned by exposing his less-than-clean past. But Robey underestimates the lengths Luther will go to stop him from committing any more heinous acts.

Adam Sandler (b. Sept. 9)
While more known for their discerning, serious side, Virgos also often have a quick wit. Virgo comedic actor Adam Sandler showcases his humor and his heart in Hustle (another great descriptor of Virgos), where he plays Stanley Sugerman, a disillusioned basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. Forced back on the road when the team comes under new management, Stanley finds a potential prodigy in Spain and brings him back to the US to prep him for the NBA draft.
