Skål! The god of Valhalla has heard our prayers. The valiant battles and daring adventures of Leif Erikkson (Sam Corlett), his sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and the Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) will stay on course with the renewal of Season 2 and Season 3.
When we last see our Vikings crew, they’re in the bloody throes of a religious war between pagans and Christians, unleashing unholy drama across the vast reaches of Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, and the relatively peaceful seaside settlement of Kattegat loses its ruler, Jarl Haakon (Caroline Henderson). Harald betrays his crush, Freydis, to support his power-hungry brother, Olaf, and Freydís herself bears the burden of becoming the prophesied savior of the Viking people. Meanwhile, in the final moments of the Season 1 finale, Leif mourns the loss of his lover during battle by violently wielding a double ax and going to town on nearby warriors. Is Leif in danger of going down the same dark path as his vengeful father before him? May the spirits of Valhalla watch over all.
Production for Season 2 has wrapped and is expected to return in 2023, while filming for Season 3 begins this spring. Vikings: Valhalla Season 1 ranks No. 1 on the Netflix Top 10 for the week of 2/28, with almost 114 million hours viewed. The show’s creator, showrunner and executive producer, Jeb Stuart, had this to say to fans of the series: “Thank you to the millions of you who have watched (and rewatched!) Season 1. The numbers have been mind-boggling and beyond my wildest expectations. I’m thrilled to be able to confirm that we wrapped and are already editing Season 2, and that production will start soon on Season 3. While the storylines for Leif, Freydís, Harald, Olaf, Canute and the rest of our amazing cast are secret, I can say without hesitation that their journeys will be even more epic than what you’ve seen so far.”
We can’t wait to see what awaits our valiant vikings next. Now, excuse us while we grow out our beards and practice our warrior roars in celebration.
