If we know anything about fashion trends, it’s that nothing truly goes away forever. While Y2K fashion has made a resurgence in recent years, another favorite from the aughts is coming back. We’re not talking about velvet tracksuits or low rise jeans, but baggy ponchos and thick-framed glasses. Ugly Betty is back in style and all four seasons are coming to Netflix on Aug. 1.
Based on the 1999 Colombian telenovela, Yo soy Betty, la fea, the comedy-drama series premiered on ABC in 2006 and ran until 2010. Ugly Betty follows Betty Suarez, a 22-year-old Mexican American woman who lands a job as the assistant to Mode magazine’s new editor-in-chief. Coming from Queens, New York, Betty feels like a fish out of water working in high fashion Manhattan — and she’s constantly reminded of that. Still, she has big dreams of becoming a magazine writer some day and hopes to work her way up, even if some of her colleagues sabotage her.
