What happens in The Marked Woman?

After a forced leave of absence following a personal tragedy, steadfast detective Anna Ripoll (Peña) returns to her job as a human trafficking investigator. But the first case she catches might be the most unusual of her entire career: A security guard discovers a young woman with visible marks of torture all over her body who’s been drugged and restrained in a commercial shipping container. What’s even more shocking is the victim has no idea what her name is, who her captors were, or how she ended up in Barcelona.

While doctors treat the unnamed woman for amnesia and her other injuries, Ripoll puzzles over how to solve a case with almost no leads. But before she can make any headway, she’s forced to partner with the shady and frenetic officer Quique Zárate. While Ripoll and Zárate butt heads over Zárate’s hidden agenda, a hired hit man attacks the unidentified woman in her hospital room. This unleashes both military-grade martial arts skills and flashes of memories buried deep within the woman. Can she and the investigators coax more hidden clues from her mind to reveal who she really is? Can they figure out why she’s being targeted before it’s too late? Or will this misaligned trio fall apart before the investigation even begins?

Is The Marked Woman based on a book?

Yes, The Marked Woman is based on a novel titled La desconocida, which was co-written by Spanish writer Rosa Montero and French writer Olivier Truc in 2023.

“I’m very excited about the Netflix release,” Montero tells Netflix. “It was a fascinating, incredibly fun, and somewhat crazy project that gave our unknown character’s story an unusual intensity. I can’t wait to see how this formidable team has translated all that suspense into the film.”
