Of the four victims of the blast, the three injured and one deceased include Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), Kate’s Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), office clerk Ronnie (Jess Chanliau), and MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler). But we don’t know who’s survived. As British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) relays to his team, “I’d like to be able to tell the ambassador whether her husband is alive or dead.”

At the very beginning of Season 2, you see Kate and Dennison in a “flurry of panic and details,” Russell told Netflix. “One of the things our show does really well, that I find intriguing and informative, [is] this unraveling of what the secret State Department actually does. You see in fine detail all of the protocols and all of the calls that are made and the chain of command when an emergency like this happens.”

Speaking of, when one of Dennison’s clerks tries to take Kate’s phone from her, she reminds them that, “I have to call the Secretary of State, the Ops Center, and the White House. You’re not taking my phone.” Only, it’s not actually her phone. It’s Dennison’s.

“You’re finding Kate and Dennison in the middle of that information mayhem and contact, because at this point they don’t know who’s safe, who’s not, who let off the explosion,” added Russell. “And I think you’re just watching these people in ‘go’ mode and they probably don’t sleep for a couple of days, like many of these workers and these heroes in the State Department.”

Stay close to Kate and Dennison as they find out who’s alive and who’s dead when The Diplomat Season 2 premieres on Oct. 31. And in the meantime, catch up on The Diplomat Season 1, only on Netflix.
