The Biggest Betrayals of Kitz: Catfishing, Affairs, Robbery and More

These rich teens are spinning a web of lies.

The conniving teens of Kitz manage to squeeze a lot of backstabbing into six episodes of the German drama. Then again, you probably have to be economical with your revenge when it's icy cold outside and snow blankets every surface of your ritzy Alpine resort town. Although it's our protagonist, Kitzbühel native Lisi (Sofie Eifertinger), who's on a quest to avenge her brother's death — by ingratiating herself into a clique of rich Munich socialites in order to take them down — the rest of the show’s characters do plenty of disloyal deeds and secret-keeping of their own. Below, we outline each of those misdeeds, who's harmed in the process and where they stand in the hierarchy of betrayal on the show. (Needless to say, there are spoilers ahead.)

Betrayal: Joseph's Death

Traitor: Vanessa

Score (out of 5): 🔪

Without this betrayal there would be no Kitz. But is this really a betrayal or an unfortunate accident? As far as Lisi knows, her brother Joseph receives texts from his secret girlfriend on New Year’s Eve. (spoiler alert: Lisi later identifies her as Vanessa, one of the Munich elite.) Then after a few drinks, Joseph decides to drive up the mountain to see her, ultimately crashing his car and dying in the process. Lisi blames Vanessa for that, but it's not like Vanessa knew Joseph would be driving to his death. They were in a relationship and presumably cared for one another — as far as intentional betrayals go, this one is a non-factor. It's really just an unfortunate accident.

Betrayal: Robbery

Traitor: Lisi and Hans

Score: 🔪🔪 🔪🔪 Sure, no one gets hurt when Lisi and fellow Kitzbühel local Hans stage a robbery (and brief hostage situation) at Vanessa's next New Year's Eve party. But Vanessa certainly doesn’t know it’s fake, and Hans ends up actually robbing her (by taking her grandmother's watch... which he eventually gives back, but still). Even if you know it's not real, a fake robbery is never ethical, and the trauma from this event sure is lasting. (Does the plan work? Yes, technically. Lisi saves the day by convincing the robber to leave, earning Vanessa’s trust in the process. But that's beside the point.)

Betrayal: Paternal Affair

Traitor: Pippa

Score: 🔪🔪🔪

Having sex with your best friend's dad is bad. But having sex with your best friend's dad while he's still married to your best friend's mom is much, much worse. There are no life or death stakes here, sure, but what Pippa does to her so-called bestie Vanessa is the ultimate betrayal — and definitely deserves expulsion from the friend group.

Betrayal: Posting an Unapproved Photo

Traitor: Kosh

Score: 🔪

A close up of character Kosh

Is it a bit deranged to post a photo of your public-figure friend, in this instance influencer Vanessa, with a known drug dealer and not consult her first? Yes. Is it a betrayal worth giving someone the silent treatment for over a year? No. All Kosh does is post an old photo of Vanessa on his social account, which has a fraction of Vanessa’s follower count. There is no ill intent here, and it’s certainly not a big enough infraction to ice out one of your closest friends.

Betrayal: Cheating (Kissing)

Traitor: Lisi and Dominik

Score: 🔪🔪🔪

Engaging in a make-out session with someone you know is in a relationship isn’t ever a moral high ground, really — even if the lust (or love) is too much to overcome in the moment. The real betrayer in this situation is Dominik, who's the one in a committed relationship with Vanessa, but still kissed Lisi. So while Lisi's betrayal isn't necessarily the highest, Dominik certainly deserves flak for cheating.

Betrayal: Catfishing

Traitor: Lisi

Score: 🔪🔪🔪

Catfishing, unfortunately (or... fortunately?) is less nefarious than other infractions on this list. When Lisi pretends to be a famous director to lead Vanessa on, though, it definitely lands on the betrayal scale. But it's what Lisi does with her catfishing spoils — releases Vanessa's "audition video" as if Vanessa was ranting about Kitzbühel and not reading lines — that causes the most harm. The town turns on Vanessa, leading to even worse consequences.

Betrayal: Framing for Robbery

Traitor: Lisi

Score: 🔪🔪

Planting Vanessa's grandmother's watch in Kosh's bag has some unintentional consequences, considering Kosh's ongoing substance-abuse problem. Wondering whether he actually stole a watch while blacked out sends him on a spiral — but it also gives Vanessa a reason to tell Kosh all of the bad feelings she's been harboring against him.

Betrayal: Ignoring a Death

Traitor: Vanessa and Dominik

Score: 🔪

The watch robbery ends up reflecting poorly on Vanessa, too, because it leads to the revelation that no one in the friend group called Kosh when his father died four months ago. In fact, they didn't even know he'd died. That might not be pure betrayal, but it is a sign of poor friendship.

Betrayal: Cheating (Sex)

Traitor: Lisi and Dominik

Score: 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪

Lisi and Dominik's flirtation evolves from illicit make-outs to steamy and consistent sexcapades — all the while they both know this affair is definitely wrong. Lisi begins to have second thoughts about her plan after getting to know Vanessa, but Dominik is still the one cheating, so his betrayal is definitely worse.

Betrayal: Dress Destruction

Traitor: Vanessa

Score: 🔪

Lisi turns down her chance to study fashion in London following her brother’s death, so the fact that her dress is included in Kitzbühel’s ritzy fashion show is a major coup. Too bad Vanessa tries to ruin things by ripping Lisi’s dress as she models it on the runway, in retaliation for cheating with her boyfriend. (Vanessa's outburst, though, is relatively tame.)

Betrayal: Video Leak

Traitor: Lisi

Score: 🔪🔪🔪🔪

Riling up outrage on the internet by leaking a fake video of Vanessa seemingly smack-talking Kitzbühel and its inhabitants isn't itself a major betrayal — much like the catfishing that got the video to begin with. When you look at the consequences, though — townies storming Vanessa's house with metaphorical pitchforks and torches and accidentally starting a literal fire that causes Vanessa's death — it's probably the worst betrayal of all.

Betrayal: Fake Texts

Traitor: Dominik

Score: 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪

Close up of Dominik

Actually, it turns out the worst betrayal comes from Dominik, not Vanessa. In fact, Vanessa didn't even have her phone the night of Joseph's death, so she never sent him any text messages. The revelation that she’s planning on breaking up with Dominik for Joseph is a big one, but leaves one major outstanding question: Who sent the texts? At the very end of the finale we discover in a flashback that Dominik had taken Vanessa's phone and lured Joseph up the mountain. Did he kill Joseph? We don't know. But we do know that Joseph wouldn't have died if he hadn't driven up the mountain, and he wouldn't have driven up the mountain if Dominik hadn't sent those texts. And if Dominik had owned up to the texts, Lisi's vendetta wouldn't have indirectly led to Vanessa’s death. Dominik didn't kill two people, but his actions directly contributed to the circumstances that led to their deaths. In the end, the tragedy is the same.
