Pulse Is Now Streaming — And Will Get Your Heart Pumping

Complications arise in the new medical drama.

    April 4, 2025

Is your heart starting to race? Do you feel weak in the knees? Well, the charming doctors of Pulse are here to help. The new series welcomes you inside the hospital doors of Netflix’s first-ever English-language medical procedural. Pulse — from Emmy winner Carlton Cuse and writer Zoe Robyn — is now streaming

“You don’t really want to be in the hospital. But if you were in the hospital — this is the one you would want to be in,” Robyn tells Tudum. “You want to be in the care of these people.”

Watch a clip of the Pulse series premiere right now.

The series is led by Dr. Danielle “Danny” Simms (Willa Fitzgerald), a third-year resident and rising star on Maguire Medical Center’s medical team. She’s joined by Colin Woodell (The Continental: From the World of John Wick), Jack Bannon (Pennyworth), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Chelsea Muirhead (Warrior), Daniela Nieves (Vampire Academy), Jessy Yates (Law & Order: SVU), and more. Over Pulse’s 10 episodes, Danny juggles mounting relationship tensions alongside the high stakes of working in an emergency room in Miami — including the threat of a hurricane.

“Danny’s not as complicated as she looks. She’s even more complicated,” Cuse says with a grin. The first photos of Pulse reveal the source of some of those complications: Dr. Xander Phillips (Woodell), the chief resident at Maguire, who is more than just Danny’s supervisor. The new images offer a glimpse at a particularly intimate moment between Danny and Xander, whose professional ambitions might be confused by their personal connection.

Cuse explains, “Xander is from a very patrician medical family and trying to find his own way in the world. He’s really trying to individuate and figure out how to make his mark. That quest guides him both in medicine and in his personal life.”

What is Pulse about?

The medical procedural follows third-year medical resident Danny, who is, Robyn says, “flawed and fallible.”  Danny is unexpectedly promoted when Maguire’s respected chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips is suspended. Danny and Xander must find a way to work together — even as the bombshell details of their complicated romance begin to spill out. Cuse says the pair’s connection is “the nucleus” of Pulse.

“We always endeavored to make Danny and Xander’s relationship a real, authentic look at a workplace romance,” Robyn says. “We really wanted to play in the gray area of that situation. Pulse shows the edges and pitfalls of their relationship — but also all the joyous moments of working a high-pressure job like this.”

As Danny and Xander try to figure out where they stand, a hurricane bears down on Miami, creating an onslaught of trauma cases. Maguire goes into lockdown and the rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of Danny and Xander’s relationship. “For an intensely private and professional person like Danny, that's a horrifying reality to wake up to,” Pulse star Fitzgerald tells Tudum.

And, Xander is at “at rock bottom” himself, Woodell tells Tudum. “He’s been suspended from the job that he loves. He’s blindsided by news that he was not expecting. He’s got a lot on his plate.” For this tight-knit group of doctors, saving patients’ lives is often less complicated than living their own.

Cuse and Robyn say that the doctors of Pulse aren’t the “superheroes” that fans of medical dramas might be used to seeing. “We wanted these characters to be real people who have to go through the relatable issues of working together in a pressure cooker,” Robyn explains. “Relationships are forming and breaking apart on Pulse.”

When does Pulse premiere?

All 10 episodes of Pulse are now streaming. The series examines what happens when the people you work with become something like family (or, even more).

“Nowadays, your work family can really be, apart from your literal family, the most important community you have,” Cuse says. “The complications that arise — between what's going on off the clock and on the clock — can get messy. It can get confusing. That’s what we wanted to explore with Pulse.”

Who is in the Pulse cast?

  • Willa Fitzgerald as Danielle “Danny” Simms: The series will center on Danny, a third-year resident in emergency medicine at Maguire Hospital who’s unexpectedly promoted to chief resident amidst the fallout of her own explosive romantic relationship. While Danny’s deep empathy makes her an exceptional doctor in training, her brash and self-sabotaging nature complicates her upward trajectory.
  • Colin Woodell as Xander Phillips: Xander makes up the other half of the romance that’s lighting up the ER. Hailing from one of Miami’s most powerful medical families, Xander is the highly confident, respected, and charismatic chief resident of emergency medicine who nevertheless gets caught up in the Maguire drama.
  • Jack Bannon as Tom Cole: A second-year surgical resident, Tom is a witty and charming Brit who came to Maguire for the excellent trauma program, but also for the lifestyle that Miami offers.
  • Jessie T. Usher as Sam Elijah: Sam is a third-year emergency medicine resident. Born and raised in the Florida Panhandle, he’s a thoughtful and altruistic doctor who, under his calm and considered demeanor, has a competitive edge.
  • Chelsea Muirhead as Sophie Chan: A surgical intern, Sophie is smart, capable, and willing to endure anything in her quest to become a great surgeon.
  • Daniela Nieves as Camila Perez: Camila is a third-year medical student who, despite long hours and an endless workload, always manages to stay optimistic.
  • Jessy Yates as Harper Simms: A second-year emergency medicine resident and a wheelchair user, Harper is self-assured and introspective. Harper also happens to be Danny’s younger sibling.
  • Justina Machado as Natalie Cruz: Natalie is a brilliant and politically savvy doctor who oversees both administration and medicine in her role as the chair of surgery and emergency medicine.
  • Santiago Segura as Gabriel Moreno: Gabriel is an ER nurse who is a highly competent team player — but not always easy to impress.
  • Jessica Rothe as Cass Himmelstein: A charismatic and charming senior ER nurse, Cass knows what she wants for her life and has a plan to get it.
  • Néstor Carbonell as Dr. Ruben Soriano: A respected and sometimes feared senior surgeon, Ruben’s commitment and passion have led him to prioritize his job above all else, and he’s as demanding of his residents as he is of himself.
  • Arturo Del Puerto as Luis Dominguez: The ER’s Charge Nurse, Luis is unflappable amidst the chaos without sacrificing his signature wit and is beloved among his staff.
  • Ash Santos as Nia Washington: Nia is a confident and scrappy Miami-Dade County EMT from a large, close-knit family.
  • Sophia Torres as Vero Cruz: Natalie’s only daughter. Vero loves her mom — who can sometimes be overly protective — but this teen also yearns for her own independence.
  • Charlayne Woodard as Dr. Lucy Broussard: An unapologetic senior ER attending doctor known for her speed and authority. She doesn’t shy away from old school methods.
  • J.R. Ramirez as Patrick Sanchez: An affable and charming ER attending doctor, who isn’t afraid of making his opinions known.

Cuse and Robyn loved working with the cast of Pulse. “Sometimes when you cast, you’re lucky if you get the people you want in half the roles, but we literally got everybody we wanted,” Cuse says. “Everyone was so delightful and talented. They brought their A games.”

As a longtime fan of the genre, Fitzgerald was honored to lead Pulse, which explores Danny’s journey through revealing flashbacks. “When I saw it was a medical drama, I was like, ‘Oh, interesting! ’” she tells Tudum. “Then I read it and realized there's so much more going on here than just the traditional procedural. It was exciting to kind of see it in sort of this new structure.”

Where was Pulse filmed?

The drama is set in Miami and Pulse filmed Season 1 there and in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Robyn can't wait for fans to see Pulse's take on the vibrant Floridian city. “There’s a certain intangible quality that Miami has — a sense of body heat and people being together,” Robyn says. “It’s like a big party happening right at the edge of the ocean.”

Robyn and Cuse were determined to imbue Pulse with that “palpable” energy. “There’s just this uniqueness about Miami that’s so special,” Cuse says. “The idea that Miami would be the place for our aspirational hospital was something that was really exciting to us. We really wanted to embrace the multicultural quality of Miami in the show.”

What songs are on the Pulse soundtrack?

On Pulse you’ll hear everything from “Bad Bunny to Benson Boone,” Cuse says. The complete Pulse soundtrack (from Emmy-nominated music supervisor Janet Lopez) is:

Robyn knew from the beginning of pre-production that she wanted Pulse to be filled with, well, pulsating tracks. “We talked about that a lot — it felt like a really important element of this aspirational location and show. To capture that Miami vibe, it’s what you need,” she says. “We needed a big cross-section of music as big as a cross-section of people in Miami.”

Can I watch the Pulse trailer?

You sure can. STAT. The trailer, above, reveals a glimpse into Danny and Xander’s relationship, which Robyn calls “the heart of the season.” Throughout the video, the duo attempts to figure out how to work together — all while dealing with their undeniable connection.

“It was important for us to take the audience on a journey that was unexpected,” Robyn says. “We really interrogate what kind of mess you can find yourself in when you fall in love with someone that you work with.”

The trailer also hints at how Danny navigates the swoons and surprises of Maguire. “She is flawed and she is fallible, and she’s complicated,” Robyn explains. “Willa plays Danny with the perfect amount of edge, which I think some people would’ve shied away from.”

To make matters even more complicated, the entire Maguire staff must also contend with the terrifying hurricane heading toward their hospital. As Robyn says, the natural disaster will “layer on even more pressure” for Danny.

Can I see some more photos from Pulse

No need for a crash cart — your Pulse photos are right here. The images give us a peek into Danny’s life, along with the “family of characters” around her, Cuse says. The showrunners are excited for viewers to meet medical professionals like Sophie Chan (Muirhead) and Daniela Nieves (Perez), who share an intense moment in the photos.

“We just love that pairing and think the audience is really going to enjoy watching these two as they try to make their way through this medical world,” Cuse says. “They’re both learning, and they’re both young and talented, and they’re trying to find their way as doctors.”

Other images tease Maguire medical emergencies to come, along with so much more Pulse-spiking drama ahead for Danny, Xander, and their colleagues. As the key art says, “Life can charge in a heartbeat.”

Who made Pulse

Pulse comes from creator, showrunner, and executive producer Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer) and showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse (LostTom Clancy’s Jack RyanLocke & Key). Robyn says the duo hopes viewers feel “hope and optimism” when they tune into Pulse

“We just wanted the show to be fun and entertaining — something that you could really enjoy after you come home from a long day,” Cuse continues. “We really want the audience to fall in love with the characters as much as we love the characters.”

Kate Dennis (New AmsterdamThe Handmaid’s Tale) is an executive producer and directs the first two episodes. Witness the whole Pulse team’s efforts, streaming now, only on Netflix
