Valeria Goldberg (la) is stuck in a golden cage. She’s in an arranged marriage to Leo Saltzman (Zurita), the son of influential businessman Samuel Saltzman (Bernal). Yes, No One Saw Us Leave is based on a memoir of the same name by Tamara Trottner. In the book, Trottner recounts the parental kidnapping that she and her brother experienced at the hands of their father. Taken from her familial home in early childhood, Trottner and her brother were separated from their mother without warning for a span of three years and relocated to multiple countries.
“I have just turned five,” Trottner says in the opening line of her memoir. “This is the last day of my childhood.”
Yes, the limited series is based on the true story of a kidnapping that rocked an affluent Jewish-Mexican community in 1968, which Trottner later wrote about from her perspective as the kidnapping victim. Unlike Trottner’s memoir, however, the Netflix adaptation follows Trotter’s mother on her agonizing search to find her children.
No One Saw Us Leave begins in a Jewish community in Mexico, but takes viewers to locales all over the world, including France, South Africa, and Israel.
