4/5 Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy What it is: After destroying America in his first Netflix special, Ronny Chieng returns to discuss D-average students turned COVID skeptics, wanting to get canceled so he can return to Malaysia to see his mom and more sound bytes from his international experiences.
Why you should watch it: Filmed at the Chinese Tuxedo in New York’s Chinatown, the special starts off feeling like a Wong Kar-Wai film, but when Chieng takes to the small round stage, he commands the room with excitement. “Yes! We did it. We solved racism,” he shouts. Having lived in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, Chieng understands that there are stupid people everywhere. In one bit, he tries to trick the audience into shouting out the worst race on the count of three. Some fall for it, and Chieng calls them the worst 10% of the population. He also laments about the terrible health care in the US (because the doctors in Grey’s Anatomy can’t stop having sex in closets), but praises America as the country where he can tell dick jokes for $12 and still appear in Marvel movies. The American Dream, right?

4/6 The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On What it is: Beyoncé’s lyrics “’cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it” come to life in this new reality dating show, hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey. Each couple on the show includes one partner who is ready for marriage and another who is still a skeptic. Putting their longtime relationships to the test, the couples break up for three weeks and swap partners. Will they come back and say “I do” or fall in love with someone else?
Why you should watch it: Do you know that Marie Kondo meme where she gleefully says, “I’m so excited because I love mess”?” That’s exactly what diving into The Ultimatum feels like. You’d think these couples would be physically separated to do their own thing, but that’s not the case. Everyone is still mingling together at the pool and happy hour. Can you imagine watching your partner flirting with someone else as you seethe in the corner? No need to imagine, because there’s plenty of that in The Ultimatum. Sometimes it feels like today’s reality shows aren’t as chaotic as they once were (e.g., the early cycles of America’s Next Top Model, Next, The Swan), but this feels like a return to that time in all the best ways. The Ultimatum gives us the kind of mess that actually sparks joy.

4/8 Dirty Lines What it is: In this Dutch series set in the 1980s, Marly is a college student living at home in a suburb outside Amsterdam. Her helicopter parents keep her sheltered, but she just wants to experience city life. When she moves in with friends in Amsterdam, Marly gets a job at the city’s first ever phone-sex line. As she helps anonymous callers find some relief, Marly also learns more about her sexual desires and sheds her conservative upbringing.
Why you should watch it: A highlight about Dirty Lines is that it doesn’t feel like a caricature of the ’80s. The only neon you’ll find is in the smoky nightclub lights shining on Marly and her friends as they discover house music for the first time. Episode 2 pays homage to Frankie Knuckles, the DJ who popularized house music at the Warehouse nightclub in Chicago. “What the Warehouse was for Chicago, we’ll be for Amsterdam,” a DJ tells Marly after a night out. (As a former Chicagoan, this callout was especially cool, given the massive legacy the Warehouse has left on today’s nightlife scene.) Dirty Lines seduces you by giving you a glimpse into the club and sex scenes of 1980s Amsterdam, and it’s especially fun being on that ride with Marly as she learns about her desires and attractions.

What it is: The students of the prestigious Las Encinas high school are back. The new season picks up after last season’s brutal murder, which is actually considered part of a normal day at school. In addition to more lavish parties, love triangles and tense moments, Las Encinas also welcomes some new students into its halls.
Why you should watch it: Surviving high school shouldn’t seem like a life-or-death situation, but that’s what makes Elite so suspenseful, season after season. As we found out the truth about Ari’s death, which was alluded to in the Season 4 premiere, Armando also met his deadly fate in the Season 4 finale. Will his killer return next season, or is Guzmán still fleeing the country? While most of the original cast members have either graduated or turned into murder suspects, the batch of new kids will most certainly get swept up in more drama in Season 5.
