John Creasy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) has quite the résumé. “US Army Special Forces, three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan,” a voice narrates in the teaser trailer for the new Man on Fire series (premieres April 30). “His history looks impressive, but his best days are far behind him.”

Man wearing a red shirt and head wrap cautiously holding a rope, standing against a wall in a dim, graffiti-covered, abandoned building with metal gates and sunlight streaming through windows.

In the teaser and in the upcoming series, Creasy aims to prove that voice wrong, coming out of retirement to strike back after a devastating loss. Fortunately, he’s played by Abdul-Mateen (Watchmen, Ambulance), whose abilities are never in doubt. “He can do everything,” writer and showrunner Kyle Killen (Lone Star) tells Tudum. “That’s what John Creasy needs. He can be incredibly powerful, and still communicates a lot without saying anything. He’s obviously incredible at action, but he’s also very adept at just revealing those little places where he lets you in.”

The teaser gives us a glimpse at both sides of that dichotomy. We see Creasy assembling a gun blindfolded, engaging in heated gunfights and fistfights, and setting off charges in a prison cell block. But we also see him consoling Poe (Billie Boullet), the only witness to a tragic event that Creasy investigates throughout the series.

A man sits beside a blindfolded woman in an office with plaques and a flag on the wall, papers and a phone on the desk; light from a window and lamp illuminate the room.

Beneath all the explosive action, Creasy’s journey towards new friendships and family is at the heart of Man on Fire. “It’s that relationship between a man and the person he’s supposed to protect, and the way that really draws out the person he’s trying to hide,” Killen says. “In some ways, he’s very comfortable with the violence and the danger. Those are areas that he understands. It’s opening himself up to other people that makes him really vulnerable.”

Creasy must balance competing impulses: to take the fight to the people who wronged Poe, and to protect her from facing a deadly fate. “What she needs from him is exactly the thing he can’t give,” Killen says. “He can be a protector, but he’s really reticent to get close and be a friend.”

Two men are fighting in a dimly lit urban alley at night, with tense expressions and raised fists, surrounded by graffiti-covered walls and trees in the background.

For now, being a protector will have to do. “Let me just be very clear: You’re not gonna survive this,” Creasy narrates as he throws a haymaker punch at the end of the teaser. Bad guys beware: This Man on Fire doesn’t care if his enemies get burned.

Also starring Alice Braga (City of God) and Scoot McNairy (True Detective), Man on Fire hits Netflix on April 30, 2026. Brace yourselves.
