Sometimes, you meet a person (or watch two people meet each other) and it feels like your heart just stops altogether. This is exactly what happens when Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) first takes the seat next to Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) — and, yeah, it’s probably how you’ll feel after watching the new Heartstopper trailer.

On paper, Charlie and Nick don’t have much in common. Charlie is a soft-spoken, openly gay overthinker; Nick is a rugby star and, in the words of Charlie’s best friends, the straightest person alive. But when they’re partnered together in class, the two form an unlikely friendship that slowly turns into a crush… on Charlie’s end, anyway. And although he’s nervous to hope for anything more, his feelings might not be completely unrequited. Just check out that shot of Nick nervously reaching for a sleeping Charlie’s hand.
Readers first fell for Charlie and Nick in Alice Oseman’s beloved webcomic, which blew up online in 2016. Two years later, the first graphic novel installment was published. And come April 22, their love story will finally hit the small screen in an eight-episode series written and executive produced by Oseman. Heartstopper also stars Yasmin Finney, William Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell and Jenny Walser as Charlie and Nick’s friends and family.
Watch the trailer below, but be warned: Your heart might just sputter and come to a stop with each nervous “hi.”
