The First 6 Minutes of the ‘Freeridge’ Premiere Packs a Punch

The On My Block spin-off introduces you to your new BFFs — Best Freeridge Friends.

    March 5, 2024

Some teenage siblings carpool together to school in the morning. Others avoid each other until it’s dinnertime. Freeridge’s Salazar sisters fight — and not with their words, as you can see above in the first six minutes of the series premiere

A spin-off of On My Block debuting Feb. 2, Freeridge introduces us to siblings Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) in a fearless bare-knuckle schoolyard brawl.  There are flips  — and a few moves that should be knockouts. The surrounding crowd of screaming classmates loves it. You will too.

“I'm excited for viewers to see a badass girl,” Monterroso Mejia tells Tudum about Gloria. “She doesn't care who she has to fight. Boys, girls — everybody can get these hands.”

Like On My Block before it, Freeridge follows a quartet of characters, with crystal-obsessed Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and indecisive Cam (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) rounding out the group. (The cold open’s setting should look familiar to fans of the coming-of-age comedy/mystery, which was also set at Freeridge High School.)  “Fans should know that the new core four of Freeridge don’t step into the shoes of our original crew,”Lauren Iungerich, co-creator of both shows, told Tudum ahead of Freeridge’s premiere. “They step into their own shoes, right alongside the legacy of the kids who came before them.”

Although the entire crew has to worry about Gloria and Ines’ latest fight — some very real stakes are now on the table, as you’ll learn in the clip — they’ve also got other problems. Demi and Cam are tired of dealing with Ines’ messes while Ines refuses to recognize she creates messes in the first place. And Gloria and Ines now owe their Tío Tonio (J.R. Villarreal) $1,000 for helping hide their antics from their sweet widower dad, Javier (Jean Paul San Pedro).

And then there’s the matter of a cursed box.

While the opening minutes of Freeridge don’t include any ill-fated mystical objects, one is about to find its way into the hands of the Core Four in the form of a seemingly innocuous box. As the Freeridge friends will come to learn in Season 1, a mysterious woman (Peggy Blow) is determined to reclaim the box, and will do anything to get it.
