Bridgerton Season 4 leads Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his now-wife Sophie Bridgerton (Yerin Ha) can’t help but find themselves drawn together. Even during their first meeting, Sophie pauses her flight from Violet Bridgerton’s (Ruth Gemmell) masquerade ball to give Benedict one swoon-inducing kiss before disappearing into the night. For Sophie, that smooch was worth the gamble of endangering her carefully laid plans as the Lady in Silver. From there, Sophie and Benedict share a kiss at the lake, an unforgettable encounter on the Bridgerton House staircase, a passionate consummation in Benedict’s room, and countless moments of yearning in between.
But we’ve never seen Benedict and Sophie as we do within the first 25 minutes of Episode 8, when they take a steamy dip in a bathtub together. As Bridgerton: The Official Podcast host Alison Hammond says to Thompson and Ha in Episode 6 of the podcast, “I’m never going to look at a bathtub in the same light ever again.”
However, there’s more to Benedict and Sophie’s Season 4 soak than mere sex. It’s a moment of care and connection, as two people from different worlds switch roles. Sophie, who has worked tirelessly for years as a maid, is pampered for the first time she can remember. Her pleasure takes center stage. Aristocratic second son Benedict — often ready to move on to the next new and exciting thing — takes the time to step into a caretaking role, which he enjoys greatly. Benedict helps Sophie into the tub, washes her hair, washes her back, and satisfies her every need, including her desire not to risk pregnancy.
Ha loves the underlying symbolism of the scene.

“It’s really poetic, isn’t it, for someone to take care of her? It’s like Benedict is washing all her troubles away,” Ha tells Tudum.
Benedict’s thoughtful actions are even more meaningful when you consider the worries Sophie carries into that tub. Her father, Lord Richard Penwood (Arthur Lee), died years prior. Sophie was imprisoned by her stepmother, Araminta Gun (Katie Leung), until mere hours before she slips into the perfumed waters of Benedict’s chambers. The threat of jail still hangs over Sophie’s head after a lifetime of abuse and forced labor (without wages) by Araminta. Yet, those thoughts float away like soap bubbles during a few minutes with Benedict.
“She’s done the work of multiple maids for years,” Ha continues. “It was really special to actually let her hair down properly and feel love finally be reciprocated after all this time.”

The tub scene marks another evolution in Benedict and Sophie’s Bridgerton love story. This is the first time they are fully honest, fully aligned, and fully committed. There are no more secrets or hurtful proposals between them: Benedict knows Sophie is the Lady in Silver, and loves her for it. Sophie also told Benedict her painful family history, including the identity of her earl father. Benedict is, obviously, even aware of Araminta’s determination to put Sophie behind bars and the scandal such a thing could cause. Still, Benedict stays and is more devoted to their relationship than ever. So much so that he apologizes for asking Sophie to be his mistress. Benedict understands Sophie should be his wife, and he was ready to propose the night prior, after he realized the truth about the Lady in Silver.
“It’s really nice to see Benedict actually committing to something and taking care of a single person,” Ha says. “That was really, really a beautifully written scene.”
Thompson agrees, explaining that an aquatic theme has followed Benedict and Sophie since the beginning of Season 4.

“There’s something quite romantic about that scene because there’s always been this thing with them and water,” he tells Tudum. “The first time they meet, they talk about wading in deeper and being in shallow water.”
What starts as a metaphor becomes reality. Benedict and Sophie manage to find deep fulfillment in just a little bit of water. “I just love the poetry of the fact that they end up in a bathtub together just in their little world,” Thompson says. “I think it’s really sweet.”
