Retiree turned mole Charles Nieuwendyk (Ted Danson) is back with A Man on the Inside, and this time, he goes undercover as the big man on campus. Grab your trench coat and magnifying glass and head to Netflix, where Season 2 of Mike Schur’s comedy series is now streaming.
The new installment takes Charles to his daughter’s alma mater, liberal arts school Wheeler College, where he meets an all-new lineup of dubious suspects. “The point of Season 1 is a guy whose life is getting very small, who decides to push against the walls that are closing in and keeping him from having a bigger life. He forms a community and experiences things that he hadn’t experienced,” says Schur. “Going into this season, Charles has been doing this for a year — he’s good at it. So everything is higher stakes. It’s a blackmail case. There are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. There are more red herring suspects and real suspects and twists and turns.”

A stolen laptop belonging to school president Jack Beringer (Max Greenfield) might not seem like cause for a private investigator. That is, unless the laptop is worth $400 million. Let’s back up: Beringer had just clinched a donation to the struggling liberal arts school from its billionaire alumnus Brad Vinick (Gary Cole) when the president’s laptop went missing. Beringer received an email from “Wheeler Guardian” threatening to spill his secrets. Beringer’s secrets may be as minor as a “botched calf implant in Miami” (hypothetically, of course), but he and provost Holly Bodgemark (Jill Talley) decide to take the issue to a P.I. because “billionaires hate messy” — they can’t afford a scandal.
Charles has gotten tired of exposing cheating husbands, and this case offers something really juicy. Once on campus, he meets a collection of faculty members with varying motivations to obstruct Vinick’s involvement on campus. “A college campus is a place that brings a lot of different sorts of people together. There are workplace families among faculty — they drive each other crazy, but they would also throw themselves in front of a train to save each other. We tried to extract the essence of the way the first season made people feel and bring that over to Season 2, without repeating ourselves or telling the same story about grief and loss.”
This already layered case gets all the more complicated when Charles falls for a spunky professor of music named Mona (played by Danson’s wife, Oscar-winning actor Mary Steenburgen). Thankfully, some of Charles’s friends from Pacific View Retirement Community — played by Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers, and John Getz — return to help him out in one particularly legendary scene. “From the very beginning, I was like, ‘I want to do a heist episode.’ I love heist episodes,” says Schur. “Someone said it should feel like Oceans 11. And so we called it ‘Oceans 75-plus.’ ”
Season 2 brings the same heart with a new mystery and suspects. “Most of the great comedies have certain very basic things in common,” says Schur. “They tell a story about an unlikely family. It’s a story about a group of people who are thrust together and find some joy or commonality in the way they just exist on earth.”
Danson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, and Henderson return from Season 1. Joining Season 2 are a slew of new cast members, including:

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen accept the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during the show at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Season 1 of A Man on the Inside stars sitcom veteran Danson as retired San Francisco professor Charles Nieuwendyk, who goes undercover at an assisted-living facility in order to help a private detective find some missing jewelry. The series is based on Maite Alberdi’s 2020 documentary The Mole Agent, an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature. “The documentary is always the North Star and will always be the North Star as long as the show exists,” says Schur. “There are themes in the documentary that any season that calls itself A Man on the Inside has to have.”
A Man on the Inside Season 1 stayed in the Top 10 of Netflix’s Most Popular English TV list for five weeks following its release. The sitcom is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Danson, and was named one of the American Film Institute’s top TV programs of the year in 2024. “I’ve talked to Ted about this a lot. Our favorite thing will continue to be when people tell us they watched it with their whole family,” says Schur about his favorite fan reaction. “Thanksgiving is a perfect time for the show to be released — that’s why we did a Thanksgiving episode. As the world fractures more and more, when multigenerational families find something we all want to watch, it’s the greatest feeling. That was part of the goal of making it: Let’s try to make something that anyone who’s between 11 and 95 might enjoy.”
Fans have fallen in love with the series in part because of the heart and humor Danson brings to the leading role. Listen to the actor talk about comedy — and the human condition — at any age with Krista Smith on her podcast Skip Intro, and read more on Tudum.

Alongside Schur (Fremulon), executive producers of A Man on the Inside Season 2 include Morgan Sackett, David Miner (3 Arts Entertainment), The Mole Agent director Alberdi and Marcela Santibañez (Micromundo Producciones), and Julie Goldman and Christopher Clements (Motto Pictures).
