“What’s wrong with this ship,” a passenger on the ill-fated vessel at the center of 1899 implores in the trailer for the new series. It’s definitely not the journey the European emigrants aboard the Kerberos expect when their trip to New York is disrupted by the discovery of a missing ship.
The Prometheus is adrift on the open sea, and when the Kerberos crew board their sister steamship, they find it eerily empty. So, where is everyone? Considering1899 comes from the creators of the trippy Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, you know there will be plenty more questions where that came from.
The pulse-pounding trailer features stormy seas, explosions, images of a mysterious triangle motif and a creepy little boy. “None of this makes any sense,” says one character.
Over the course of eight episodes, mysterious circumstances around the voyage of the Kerberos unravel. The passengers, all hailing from different parts of the world, are united by their dreams for a new future abroad. A true international production, the ensemble cast includes actors from around the world: Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser.
Put the puzzle pieces together when the mystery-thriller series debuts Nov. 17 on Netflix.
