Narrator: Tim Burton has brought the Addams Family back to the small screen. Or, more specifically, one young member of the Addams Family. ‘Wednesday’ puts the spotlight exclusively on Wednesday Addams. The series is both a love letter to all of the Addams Family stories as well as a fresh new take. And it's packed with fun details that call back to the cult classic films. Did you catch all these references? Let's dive in, with major spoilers ahead.
[TITLE CARD] THE KOOKIEST EASTER EGGS IN ‘WEDNESDAY’
[CLIP] Jenna Ortega (as Wednesday Addams): You know the old saying. “Never bring a knife to a sword fight.” Unless it’s concealed.
Narrator: Cousin Itt was one of the most unique characters in the original ‘Addams Family’ series. And although he doesn’t appear in ‘Wednesday,’ the series does have a clever way to feature the hairiest Addams. When Wednesday first discovers the Nightshade Society, there’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” shot of a portrait of Cousin Itt mounted on the wall as she walks down the stairs. Tim Burton was instrumental in bringing Wednesday to life, and the show pays tribute to his legacy in a really cool way.
Play close attention to the scenes in Weathervane Cafe. The Weathervanes adorning the back wall feature imagery from Tim Burton’s past movies. Eagle-eyed viewers might notice the knife and barber shop pole representing ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.’ You can also spot the Penguin’s top hat and umbrella from ‘Batman Returns,’ the sailboat from ‘Cabin Boy,’ and a pair of seagulls flying above the titular fruit from ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ Can you figure out which movies the rest of the Weathervanes reference?
Throughout the series, Wednesday can be seen playing her pitch-black cello, and her musical taste clearly fits her personality. At one point, she plays an instrumental cover of “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones. It’s a clever little touch, once you recognize the song. Black is Wednesday’s signature color, after all.
[CLIP] Catherine Zeta-Jones (as Morticia Addams): Please excuse Wednesday. She's … allergic to color.
Narrator: That theme also comes through in the visual design. Showrunner Miles Millar explained the conscious decision to have Wednesday be the only character to wear black throughout the show while everyone else had color in their costumes. Pause any scene. Not even the background actors wear black. It’s a subtle detail that you can’t unsee once you know.
Speaking of clever small touches, when Wednesday discovers the existence of a secret society at Nevermore, she figures out the way to get to their lair is through a statue of Edgar Allan Poe, located in the heart of the school. After solving a riddle she finds right on the statue, Wednesday realizes you have to snap twice to make the statue open into the Nightshade’s hideout.
[CLIP] Jenna Ortega (as Wednesday Addams): [chuckles softly, snapping fingers]
Narrator: Naturally, those snaps use the exact same rhythm as the snaps in the original ‘Addams Family’ theme song. Whether you are meeting the Addams Family for the first time in ‘Wednesday’ or are a long-time fan of the stories that came before, this delightfully dark fantasy is going to make you feel right at home.
[CLIP] Jenna Ortega (as Wednesday Addams): No, I don’t really feel better. There’s just something wrong about this place. Not just because it’s a school.
