Three highly anticipated films had their world premieres in the beachside cinema of Venice International Film Festival, where old Hollywood glamour lives on. Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly delivered George Clooney and Adam Sandler off a boat and onto the red carpet, with photographer Greg Williams capturing magnetic charm of the film’s stars. Later in the festival, the audience were brought to their feet for a 15-minute standing ovation for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, celebrating the filmmaker and his cast of Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Felix Kammerer. And the Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow debuted her latest thriller, A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, receiving another extended standing ovation and resounding critical praise.
The San Juan Mountains of Colorado welcomed the brightest stars of the screen for the 52nd running of the Telluride Film Festival. Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, and Sandler joined filmmaker Baumbach to premiere Jay Kelly in the US and the cast and filmmakers of Frankenstein also made the post-Venice trip with two surprise screenings of the Gothic tale. Edward Berger debuted his latest adaptation, Ballad of a Small Player, alongside the star of the film, Colin Farrell, while Richard Linklater arrived with actors Zoey Deutch and Guillaume Marbeck in support of Nouvelle Vague, his love letter to the French New Wave, which had its world premiere at Cannes in May. On the non-fiction front, The New Yorker editor David Remnick attended the festival with director Marshall Curry and delighted the analog crowd with The New Yorker at 100, a documentary about the iconic publication.
The theaters of Toronto were busy as films and series made premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. Frankenstein, Ballad of a Small Player, and Nouvelle Vague all hit the screen again while Clint Bentely’s Train Dreams also continued to delight audiences after it’s world premiere at Sundance in January 2025. Multiple series debuted episodes at the festival, including the Jason Bateman and Jude Law drama Black Rabbit and Mae Martin’s Wayward. Rian Johnson celebrated the world premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third in his series of Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) films. After a world premiere at Cannes, Shih-Ching Tsou brought her Left-Handed Girl to Canada. Other films that screened at TIFF included All the Empty Rooms, Cover-Up, Good News, and Steve.
Kathryn Bigelow’s A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE made its US premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival, joined by her cast of Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Tracy Letts, Jared Harris, Anthony Ramos, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clark. While Jay Kelly doesn’t take place in New York, it was a homecoming for Brooklyn-native Noah Baumbach as he brought his latest film to the festival. Festival goers were also treated to Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, as well as documentaries Cover-Up and The Perfect Neighbor.
Talent hit the red carpet of London ahead of their premieres at BFI London Film Festival. The filmmakers and stars of seven films toasted their films, including Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Frankenstein, Ballad of a Small Player, Jay Kelly, Train Dreams, Left-Handed Girl, and Cover-Up.
