Gal Gadot has already mastered the art of fighting in heels. As Diana Prince in Wonder Woman, she accessorized her armor with a pair of platform sandals, the better to grind down and crush evil with. In Red Notice, the actor adds a new weapon to her sartorial arsenal: a slinky red Versace evening dress, with a thigh-high slit.
It’s an outfit that screams femme fatale, while also cleverly undermining the trope and highlighting the double standard that plagues women in action movies: kick ass, sure, but make sure you look hot while doing it. Gadot’s character, The Bishop, knows she has to look a certain way to get men to underestimate her — at their own peril. But in costume designer Mary Vogt’s hands, the red dress becomes a tool rather than a hindrance. And the slit? Well, how else are you supposed to high kick in a gown?
And high kick she does. In a fight scene set in the Valencian villa of the notorious arms dealer Sotto Voce (Chris Diamantopoulos), the Bishop sheds her stilettos and batters rivals John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) and Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) with her bare feet, in order to claim one of Cleopatra’s coveted golden eggs before either of them can get it. Gadot’s skill lies in making fighting in a gown look as effortless as she does lassoing the truth out of her enemies. But don’t fool yourself, this all takes real skill.
“It was a challenge,” Gadot tells us, “but it was fun. There’s a part where I’m jumping on Ryan’s waist with the dress... I think we were both a little embarrassed, but you do what you gotta do.
Still, that’s one thing the actor feels she can cross off her bucket list. “Fighting with an evening dress? Check,” she says.
She may have a rival for the championship title, however. When we asked co-star Dwayne Johnson how he thinks he’d fare sparring in a similar attire, he didn’t hold back. “I have gotten into a fight in an evening gown,” he says. “Welcome to my Friday night when I open the tequila.”
