“I’ve been told nothing, I don’t know who’s here, what’s happening and what I’m going to do,” says Maya Rudolph when she steps on the set of Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Mystery. She’s exactly right: When stars join the cast of Murderville, an improvisational police procedural led by detective Terry Seattle (Will Arnett), they have absolutely no knowledge of anything they’ll be subjected to — no script, no guidance and no idea what’s going to happen next. In this special standalone holiday episode of Murderville, Maya Rudolph and Jason Bateman join the cast to solve the holly-est, jolly-est of mysteries: Who killed Santa (played in a brilliant cameo from Sean Hayes) with that sharpened candy cane, and why?
Directed by Laura Murphy, Who Killed Santa? utilizes four handheld cameras to capture both the madcap antics being led by Seattle, as well as the guest stars’ reactions. There’s no telling how the story will unfold (Marshawn Lynch and Pete Davidson also show up, to add more layers to the story), but it’s a real mystery — all that’s certain is that there will be as much Christmas chaos as humanly possible.
