Ready to score? The UEFA European Football Championship and the CONMEBOL Copa América are both currently ongoing, in Germany and here in the United States, respectively, so soccer (i.e. football) mania is running high. With the quarterfinals drawing ever nearer, both tournaments are heating up fast. 

In celebration of the contests, here’s a hat trick of streaming selections that celebrate the beautiful game and its international popularity. Watch a selection of films about the sport from around the globe; a few documentaries about some of the world’s greatest players, past and present; or a docuseries about the US women’s team, to remember that team’s best players while all those men’s squads battle it out. So go on and get streaming — the weekend kicks off now!   

But first, what’s new on Netflix?

The ultimate parental humiliation. Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King star in Richard LaGravenese’s new romantic comedy A Family Affair, in which a young woman (King) finds out that her mom (Kidman) is hooking up with her celebrity boss (Efron). Not something you want to see? Check out a room with the view: The new reality series Owning Manhattan follows real estate mogul Ryan Serhant (of Million Dollar Listing fame) as he guides his crew of ambitious agents to sell some of the most luxurious properties in New York City. Want a competition with a little more mystery? The Mole, the reboot of the cult classic 2000s reality series, sees 12 contestants take on a series of challenges, all while trying to determine who among them is secretly sabotaging their progress. The brand-new Season 2 of the series has now snuck onto service.

If you have just a night … 

Find strength in heartbreak. You may think it would be painful to relive last year’s Women’s World Cup, but the four-part docuseries Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team (which clocks in at just under three hours) still inspires with its depiction of the passion, dedication, and — of course — pressure these astonishing athletes live with in the weeks leading up to the event. Directed by Rebecca Gitlitz, it follows the women of the U.S. national team as they try for a third World Cup victory in a row, with insight from players, coaches, and commentators. 

If you have a whole day … 

Go on a tour — a world tour. A quartet of soccer movies from around the world, both dramatic and comedic, provides international perspectives on the beloved game. Kick things off with Curro Velázquez’s 2017 Spanish comedy Holy Goalie, in which a group of monks form a soccer team in hopes of winning a tournament that could save their monastery. Next up is Rolie Nikiwe’s Inside Story, a 2011 drama from South Africa about a talented footballer (Kevin Ndege Mamboleo) who discovers he’s HIV-positive. Follow it up with Yibrán Asuad’s 2020 coming-of-age rom-com All the Freckles in the World, in which a 13-year-old boy starts playing to impress his crush in 1994 Mexico City. And end with Sameer Saxena’s 2022 Indian comedy Jaadugar, about a small-time magician (Jitendra Kumar) who must help his town’s hapless team win a local tournament. 

If you have the entire weekend … 

Spend it with some greats. Start a docuseries marathon with 2022’s Captains and 2023’s Captains of the World, which put the spotlight on the players of national teams from around the globe as they pursued a spot in the 2022 World Cup (in the first series) and then competed for glory (in the second). It all culminates in that epic showdown between Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, and France, with a star turn from Kylian Mbappé. Speaking of star turns, watch another with 2023’s Beckham, in which David Beckham looks back on the highs and lows of his storied career (alongside wife Victoria Beckham, naturally). Finish things off with a series about a legendary footballer in a new stage of his life: 2019’s Maradona in Mexico sees the Argentine icon take on a coaching gig for the Mexican club Dorados de Sinaloa.   

Don’t forget, you have one last chance … 

… to keep yourself up at night. Robert Englund stars as the dream-haunting menace Freddy Krueger in the first five Nightmare on Elm Street films. Wes Craven’s 1984 original, Jack Sholder’s Freddy’s Revenge (1985), Chuck Russell’s Dream Warriors (1987), Renny Harlin’s The Dream Master (1988), and Stephen Hopkins’ The Dream Child (1989) will all be gone at the end of the month; after that, you’ll only be able to see Freddy in your nightmares.
