“I saw your doppelgänger today” is a dreaded phrase your friends might say every so often, before sharing a picture of a random person who looks absolutely nothing like you. But what if you chanced upon someone who’s your mirror image — twice? That’s the deal in the drama series Triptych. After encountering a dying stranger who looks exactly like her, a forensics agent (Maite Perroni) sets out on a perilous journey to find the truth behind her own identity. As she seeks answers, she uncovers a web of elaborate secrets and lies. The Mexican mystery thriller, created by screenwriter Leticia López Margalli (Dark Desire), premiered Feb. 22 on Netflix.

Is Triptych based on a true story?

“This story is inspired by actual events,” reads the text at the start of Episode 1. But Triptych never reveals which events the series is based on. What we do know is that the premise has a number of similarities to a real-life case brought to light a few years ago in the 2018 documentary Three Identical Strangers. The film tells the true story Eddy Galland, David Kellman and Bobby Shafran, triplets separated at birth who coincidentally met each other as adults. The siblings later found out they were adopted by different families as part of an ethically dubious social experiment.
